Last Night of Shaaban

اللّهُمَّ إنَّ هذَا الشَّهْرَ الْمُبَارَكَ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ

allahumma inna hadha alshshahra almubaraka alladhy ’unzila fihi alqur’anu

O Allah: verily, this blessed month, in which the Qur'an was revealed

وَجُعِلَ هُدَىً لِلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِنَ الْهُدَى وَالْفُرْقَانِ

wa ju`ila hudan lilnnasi wa bayynatin mina alhuda wal-furqani

and was made guidance for people and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong),

قَدْ حَضَرَ

qad hadara

has commenced

فَسَلِّمْنَا فِيه ِوَسَلَّمْهُ لَنَا

fasallimna fihi wa sallimhu lana

So, (please) keep us out of blemish during it, and keep it sound for us,

وَتَسَلَّمْهُ مِنَّا فِي يُسْرٍ مِنْكَ وَعَافِيَةٍ،

wa tasallamhu minna fi yusrin minka wa `afiyatin

accept it from us in a state of prosperity and health granted to us by You, accept my simple (acts).

يَا مَنْ أَخَذَ الْقَلِيلَ وَشَكَرَ الْكَثِيرَ

ya man akhadha alqalila wa shakara alkathira

O’ He who acknowledges and gives answer many times to the very little offered to Him and thanks us by giving us plenty,

اقْبَلْ مِنِّي الْيَسِيرَ.

aqbal minny aliyasira

(please) accept from me the little (deed).

اللّهُمَّ إنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ أَن ْتَجْعَلَ لِي إلَى كُلِّ خَيْرٍ سَبِيلاً،

allahumma inni asaluka an taj`ala li ila kull khayrin sabilan

O Allah: I beseech You to make for me a path to every decency,

وَمِنْ كُلِّ مَا لا تُحِبُّ مَانِعاً

wa min kulli ma la tuhibbu mani`an

and to make for me a barrier against everything that You do not like

يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ،

ya arhama alrrahimina

O the most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

يَا مَنْ عَفَا عَنِّي وَعَمَّا خَلَوْتُ بِهِ مِنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ،

ya man `afa `anni wa `amma khalawtu bihi mina alssayyi’ati

O He Who has pardoned me and overlooked the misdeeds that I have committed secretly;

يَا مَنْ لَمْ يُؤَاخِذْنِي بِارْتِكَابِ الْمَعَاصِي،

ya man lam yu´akhidhny biartikabi alma`asi

O He Who has not punished me for my committing acts of disobedience to Him:

عَفْوَكَ عَفْوَكَ عَفْوَكَ، يَا كَرِيمُ.

`afwaka `afwaka `afwaka ya karimu

I seek Your pardon, I seek Your pardon, I seek Your pardon, O the All-generous.

إلهِي وَعَظْتَنِي فَلَمْ أَتَّعِظْ،

ilahy wa `aztany falam atta`iz

O my God: You advised me, but I have not followed Your advice,

وَزَجَرْتَنِي عَنْ مَحَارِمِكَ فَلَمْ أَنْزَجِرْ،

wa zajartany `an maharimika falam anzajir

and You rebuked me for violating that which You have deemed forbidden, but I have not stopped,

فَمَا عُذْرِي؟

fama `udhri

Now, what is my excuse?

فَاعْفُ عَنِّي يَا كَرِيمُ، عَفْوَكَ عَفْوَكَ.

fa`fu `anni ya karimu `afwaka `afwaka

So, (please) pardon me, O the All-generous; I seek Your pardon, I seek Your pardon!

اللّهُمَّ إنّي أَسْأَلُك َالرَّاحَةَ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ،

allahumma inni asaluka alrrahata `inda almawti

O Allah: I beseech You for rest at death,

وَالْعَفْوَ عِنْدَ الْحِسَابِ،

wal-`afwa `inda alhisabi

and for pardon at calling to account.

عَظُمَ الذَّنْبُ مِنْ عَبْدِكَ فَلْيَحْسُنِ التَّجَاوُزُ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ،

`azuma aldhdhanbu min `abdika faliyahsuni alttjauuzu min `indika

Great is the sin of Your servant; so, let Your overlooking him be excellent.

يَا أَهْلَ التَّقْوَى وَيَا أَهْلَ الْمَغْفِرَةِ، عَفْوَكَ عَفْوَكَ.

ya ahla alttaqwa wa ya ahla almaghfirati `afwaka `afwaka

O He Who is worthy of being feared and is worthy of forgiving; I seek Your pardon, I seek Your pardon.

اللّهُمَّ إنِّي عَبْدُكَ بْنُ عَبْدِكَ بْنُ أَمَتِكَ

allahumma inni `abduka ibnu `abdika ibnu amatika

Allah: I am Your servant and the son of Your servant and Your she-servant,

ضَعِيفٌ فَقِيرٌ إلَى رَحْمَتِكَ،

da`ifun faqirun ila rahmatika

and I am weak and in need for Your mercy;

وَأَنْتَ مُنْزِلُ الْغِنَى وَالْبَرَكَةِ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ،

wa anta munzilu alghina wal-barakati `ala al`ibadi

and You are the Pourer of wealth and bless on the servants (of You),

قَاهِرٌ مُقْتَدِرٌ

qahirun muqtadirun

and You are omnipotent and full of power;

أَحْصَيْتَ أَعْمَالَهُمْ،

ahsayta a`malahum

as You have recorded all their (i.e. Your servants) deeds,

وَقَسَمْتَ أَرْزَاقَهُمْ،

wa qasamta arzaqahum

and You have decided the sustenance of each one them,

وَجَعَلْتَهُمْ مُخْتَلِفَةً أَلْسِنَتُهُمْ وَأَلْوَانُهُمْ خَلْقاً مِنْ بَعْدِ خَلْقٍ،

wa ja`altahum mukhtalifatan alsinatuhum wa alwanuhum khalqan min ba`di khalqin

and You have made them of different languages and colors; in different stages of creation;

وَلا يَعْلَمُ الْعِبَادُ عِلْمَكَ،

wa la ya`lamu al`ibadu `ilmaka

Your servants can never attain Your knowledge,

وَلا يَقْدِرُ الْعِبَادُ قَدْرَكَ،

wa la yaqdiru al`ibadu qadraka

and Your servants can never recognize the real estimate that is due to You

وَكُلُّنَا فَقِيرٌ إلَى رَحْمَتِكَ،

wa kullna faqirun ila rahmatika

and all of us are needy for Your mercy;

فَلا تَصْرِفْ عَنِّي وَجْهَكَ،

fala tasrif `anni wajhaka

So, (please) do not turn Your Face away from me,

وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنْ صَالِحِي خَلْقِكَ فِي الْعَمَلِ وَالأَمَلِ وَالْقَضَاءِ وَالْقَدَرِ.

waj`alny min salihy khalqika fi al`amali wal-amali wal-qada‘i wal-qadari

and include me with the virtuous creatures of You in deeds, hopes, and Your decisions (for me).

اللّهُمَّ أَبْقِنِي خَيْرَ الْبَقَاءِ،

allahumma abqiny khayra albaqa‘i

O Allah: (please) keep me alive in the best manner of living,

وَأَفْنِنِي خَيْرَ الْفَنَاءِ عَلَى مُوَالاةِ أَوْلِيَائِكَ،

wa afniny khayra alfana‘i `ala muwalati awliya’ika

and decide for me to die in the best manner of death keeping loyal to Your representatives,

وَمُعَادَاةِ أَعْدَائِكَ

wa mu`adati a`da’ika

and incurring the enmity of Your enemies,

وَالرَّغْبَةِ إلَيْكَ، وَالرَّهْبَةِ مِنْكَ،

wal-rraghbati ilayka wal-rrahbati minka

and keeping desiring for You and fearing from You,

وَالْخُشُوعِ وَالْوَفَاءِ وَالتَّسْلِيمِ لَكَ،

wal-khushu`i wal-wafa‘i wal-ttaslimi laka

and submission, faithfulness, and compliance with You,

وَالتَّصْدِيقِ بِكِتَابِكَ،

wal-ttasdiqi bikitabika

and keeping belief in Your Book

وَاتِّبَاعِ سُنَّةِ رَسُولِكَ.

wattiba`i sunnati rasulika

and following Your Prophet’s instructions.

اللّهُمَّ مَا كَانَ فِي قَلْبِي

allahumma ma kana fi qalby

O Allah: as for whatever I bear in my heart,

مِنْ شَكٍّ أَوْ رِيبَةٍ

min shakkin aw ribatin

including suspicion or doubt

أَوْ جُحُودٍ أَوْ قُنُوطٍ

aw juhudin aw qunutin

or denial or despair

أَوْ فَرَحٍ أَوْ بَذَخٍ أَوْ بَطَرٍ

aw farahin aw badhakhin aw batarin

or (excessive) joy or lavish expenditure or recklessness

أَوْ خُيَلاءَ أَوْ رِيَاءٍ أَوْ سُمْعَةٍ

aw khuyala‘a aw rya‘in aw sum`atin

or pride or arrogance or ostentation

أَوْ شِقَاقٍ أَوْ نِفَاقٍ

aw shiqaqin aw nifaqin

or discord or hypocrisy

أَوْ كُفْرٍ أَوْ فُسُوقٍ أَوْ عِصْيَانٍ

aw kufrin aw fusuqin aw `isyanin

or unbelief or licentiousness or disobedience

أَوْ عَظَمَةٍ أَوْ شَيْءٍ لا تُحِبُّ،

aw `azamatin aw shay‘in la tuhibbu

or conceit or anything else that You do not like;

فَأَسْأَلُكَ يَا رَبِّ أَنْ تُبَدِّلَنِي مَكَانَهُ إيمَاناً بِوَعْدِكَ،

fasaluka ya rabbi an tubaddlany makanahu ‘imanan biwa`dika

I thus beseech You, O my Lord, to substitute all that with belief in Your promise

وَوَفَاءً بِعَهْدِكَ،

wa wafa‘an bi`ahdika

and fulfilling of my covenant to You

وَرِضاً بِقَضَائِكَ،

wa ridan biqada’ika

and satisfaction with what You decide for me

وَزُهْداً فِي الدُّنْيَا،

wa zuhdan fi alddunya

and indifference to the worldly pleasures

وَرَغْبَةً فِيمَا عِنْدَكَ،

wa raghbatan fima `indaka

and desire for that which You have

وَأَثَرَةً وَطُمَأْنِينَةً وَتَوْبَةً نَصُوحاً،

wa atharatan wa tumaninatan wa tawbatan nasuhan

and altruism and tranquility and sincere repentance;

أَسْأَلُكَ ذلِكَ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.

asaluka dhalika ya rabba al`alamina

I beseech You for all that, O the Lord of the worlds.

إلهِي أَنْتَ مِنْ حِلْمِكَ تُعْصَى فَكَأَنَّكَ لَمْ تُرَ،

ilahy anta min hilmika tu`sa faka-annaka lam tura

O my God: because You are so forbearing, You are disobeyed as if You are not present,

وَمِنْ كَرَمِكَ وَجُودِكَ تُطَاعُ فَكَأَنَّكَ لَمْ تُعْصَ،

wa min karamika wa judika tuta`u faka-annaka lam tu`sa

and because You are so generous and magnanimous, You are obeyed as if You have not been disobeyed at all

وَأَنَا وَمَنْ لَمْ يَعْصِكَ سُكَّانُ أَرْضِكَ

wa ana wa man lam ya`sika sukkanu ardika

Both those who have not disobeyed You and I are the inhabitants of Your lands;

فَكُنْ عَلَيْنَا بِالْفَضْلِ جَوَاداً،

fakun `alayna bilfadli jawadan

So, (please) confer magnanimously upon us with Your favors

وَبِالْخَيْرِ عَوَّاداً،

wa bilkhayri `awwadan

and always refer to us with Your goodness

يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ،

ya arhama alrrahimina

O the most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

وَصَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ صَلاةً دَائِمَةً

wa salla allahu `ala muhammadin wa alihi salatan da’imatan

May Allah bless Muhammad and his Household with endless blessings

لا تُحْصَى وَلا تُعَدُّ وَلا يَقْدِرُ قَدْرَهَا غَيْرُكَ

la tuhsa wa la tu`add wa la yaqdiru qadraha ghayruka

that are innumerable, uncountable, and none can do it save You,

يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

ya arhama alrrahimina

O the most Merciful of all those who show mercy.
