Sahifa Sajjadiya 42: Upon Completing a Reading of the Qur'an

أَللَّهُمَّ إنَّكَ أَعَنْتَنِي عَلَى خَتْمِ كِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَهُ نُوراً وَجَعَلْتَهُ مُهَيْمِناً عَلَى كُلِّ كِتَاب أَنْزَلْتَهُ، وَفَضَّلْتَهُ عَلَى كُلِّ حَدِيث قَصَصْتَهُ، وَفُرْقاناً فَرَقْتَ بِهِ بَيْنَ حَلالِكَ وَحَرَامِكَ، وَقُرْآناً أَعْرَبْتَ بِهِ عَنْ شَرَائِعِ أَحْكَامِكَ، وَكِتَاباً فَصَّلْتَهُ لِعِبَادِكَ تَفْصِيلاً، وَوَحْياً أَنْزَلْتَهُ عَلَى نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّد صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ تَنْزِيلاً، وَجَعَلْتَهُ نُوراً نَهْتَدِي مِنْ ظُلَمِ الضَّلاَلَةِ وَالْجَهَـالَةِ بِـاتِّبَاعِـهِ، وَشِفَـاءً لِمَنْ أَنْصَتَ بِفَهْم التَّصْدِيقِ إلَى اسْتِمَاعِهِ، وَمِيزَانَ قِسْط لاَ يَحِيْفُ عَنِ الْحَقِّ لِسَانُهُ، وَنُورَ هُدىً لاَ يُطْفَأُ عَنِ الشَّاهِدِينَ بُرْهَانُهُ، وَعَلَمَ نَجَاة لاَ يَضِلُّ مَنْ أَمَّ قَصْدَ سُنَّتِهِ وَلاَ تَنَالُ أَيْدِي الْهَلَكَاتِ مَنْ تَعَلَّقَ بِعُرْوَةِ عِصْمَتِهِ، أَللَّهُمَّ فَإذْ أَفَدْتَنَا الْمعُونَةَ عَلَى تِلاَوَتِهِ، وَسَهَّلْتَ جَوَاسِيَ أَلْسِنَتِنَا بِحُسْنِ عِبَارَتِهِ، فَاجْعَلْنَا مِمَّنْ يَرْعَاهُ حَقَّ رِعَايَتِهِ، وَيَدِينُ لَكَ بِاعْتِقَادِ التَّسْلِيْمِ لِمُحْكَمِ آياتِهِ، وَيَفْزَعُ إلى الإِقْرَارِ بِمُتَشَابِهِهِ وَمُوضَحَاتِ بَيِّناتِهِ. أللَّهُمَّ إنَّكَ أَنْزَلْتَهُ عَلَى نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّد صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ مُجْمَلاً، وَأَلْهَمْتَهُ عِلْمَ عَجَائِبِهِ مُكَمَّلاً، وَوَرَّثْتَنَا عِلْمَهُ مُفَسَّراً، وَفَضَّلْتَنَا عَلَى مَنْ جَهِلَ عِلْمَهُ، وَقَوَّيْتَنَا عَلَيْهِ لِتَرْفَعَنَا فَوْقَ مَنْ لَمْ يُطِقْ حَمْلَهُ. أللَّهُمَّ فَكَمَا جَعَلْتَ قُلُوبَنَا لَهُ حَمَلَةً، وَعَرَّفْتَنَا بِرَحْمَتِكَ شَرَفَهُ وَفَضْلَهُ، فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد الْخَطِيْبِ بِهِ، وَعَلَى آلِهِ الْخُزّانِ لَهُ، وَاجْعَلْنَا مِمَّنْ يَعْتَرِفُ بِأَنـَّهُ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ حَتَّى لاَ يُعَارِضَنَا الشَّكُّ فِي تَصْدِيقِهِ وَلاَ يَخْتَلِجَنَا الزَّيْغُ عَنْ قَصْدِ طَرِيقِهِ. أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِـهِ، وَاجْعَلْنَا مِمَّنْ يَعْتَصِمُ بِحَبْلِهِ، وَيَـأْوِي مِنَ الْمُتَشَـابِهَاتِ إلَى حِرْزِ مَعْقِلِهِ، وَيَسْكُنُ فِي ظِـلِّ جَنَاحِهِ، وَيَهْتَدِي بِضَوْءِ صَباحِهِ، وَيَقْتَدِي بِتَبَلُّج إسْفَارِهِ، وَيَسْتَصْبحُ بِمِصْباحِهِ، وَلا يَلْتَمِسُ ألْهُدَى فِي غَيْرِهِ. أللَّهُمَّ وَكَمَا نَصَبْتَ بِهِ مُحَمَّداً عَلَماً لِلدَّلالَةِ عَلَيْكَ، وَأَنْهَجْتَ بِآلِهِ سُبُلَ الرِّضَا إلَيْكَ. فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ وَاجْعَلِ القُرْآنَ وَسِيلَةً لَنَا إلَى أَشْرَفِ مَنَازِلِ الْكَرَامَةِ، وَسُلَّماً نَعْرُجُ فِيهِ إلَى مَحَلِّ السَّلامَةِ، وَسَبَباً نُجْزَى بِهِ النَّجاةَ فِي عَرْصَةِ الْقِيَامَةِ، وَذَرِيعَةً نُقْدِمُ بِهَا عَلَى نَعِيْمِ دَارِ الْمُقَامَةِ. أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ وَاحْطُطْ بالْقُرْآنِ عَنَّا ثِقْلَ الأوْزَارِ، وَهَبْ لَنَا حُسْنَ شَمَائِلِ الأَبْرَارِ وَاقْفُ بِنَا آثَارَ الَّذِينَ قَامُوا لَكَ بِهِ آنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ وَأَطْرَافَ النَّهَارِ حَتَّى تُطَهِّرَنَا مِنْ كُلِّ دَنَس بِتَطْهِيرِهِ، وَتَقْفُوَ بِنَا آثَارَ الَّذِينَ اسْتَضَـآءُوْا بِنُورِهِ، وَلَمْ يُلْهِهِمُ الأَمَلُ عَنِ الْعَمَـل فَيَقْطَعَهُمْ بِخُدَعِ غُرُورِهِ. أَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ واجْعَلِ القُرْآنَ لنا فِي ظُلَمِ اللَّيالِي مُونِساً وَمِنْ نَزَغَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ وَخَطَرَاتِ الْوَسَاوِسِ حَارِساً، وَلأقْدَامِنَا عَنْ نَقْلِهَا إلَى الْمَعَاصِيْ حَابِساً، وَلأِلْسِنَتِنَا عَنِ الْخَوْضِ فِي الباطِلِ مِنْ غَيْرِ مَا آفَة مُخْرِساً، وَلِجَوَارِحِنَا عَنِ اقْتِرَافِ الآثامِ زَاجِراً، وَلِمَا طَوَتِ الغَفْلَةُ عَنَّا مِنْ تَصَفُّحِ الاعْتِبَارِ نَاشِراً حَتَّى تُوصِلَ إلَى قُلُوبِنَا فَهْمَ عَجَائِبِهِ وَزَوَاجِرَ أَمْثَـالِهِ الَّتِي ضَعُفَتِ الْجِبَالُ الرَّوَاسِي عَلَى صَلاَبَتِهَا عَنِ احْتِمَالِهِ. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ وَأَدِمْ بِالْقُرْانِ صَلاَحَ ظاهِرِنا، وَاحْجُبْ بِهِ خَطَراتِ الْوَسَاوِسِ عَنْ صِحَّةِ ضَمَائِرِنَا، وَاغْسِلْ بِهِ دَرَنَ قُلُوبِنَا وَعَلاَئِقَ أَوْزَارِنَا، وَاجْمَعْ بِهِ مُنْتَشَرَ أُمُورِنَا، وَأَرْوِ بِهِ فِي مَـوْقِفِ الْعَرْضِ عَلَيْكَ ظَمَأ هَوَاجِرِنَا، وَاكْسُنَا بِهِ حُلَلَ الأَمَانِ يَوْمَ الْفَزَعِ الأكْبَرِ فِي نشُورِنَا. أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ وَاجْبُرْ بِالْقُرْآنِ خَلَّتَنَا مِنْ عَدَمِ الإمْلاَقِ، وَسُقْ إلَيْنَا بِهِ رَغَدَ الْعَيْشِ وَخِصْبَ سَعَةِ الأرْزَاقِ، وَجَنِّبْنَا بِهِ الضَّرَائِبَ الْمَذْمُومَةَ وَمَدَانِيَ الأخْلاَقِ، وَاعْصِمْنَا بِهِ مِنْ هُوَّةِ الكُفْرِ وَدَوَاعِـي النِّفَاقِ حَتَّى يَكُوْنَ لَنَا فِي الْقِيَامَةِ إلَى رِضْوَانِكَ وَجِنَانِكَ قَائِداً وَلَنَا فِي الدُّنْيا عَنْ سَخَطِكَ وَتَعَدِّي حُدُودِكَ ذَائِداً، وَلِمَا عِنْدَكَ بِتَحْلِيلِ حَلاَلِهِ وَتَحْرِيم حَرَامِهِ شَاهِداً. أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ وَهَوِّنْ بِالْقُرْآنِ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ عَلَى أَنْفُسِنَا كَرْبَ السِّيَاقِ، وَجَهْدَ الأنِينِ، وَتَرادُفَ الْحَشَارِجِ إذَا بَلَغَتِ ألنُّفُوسُ التَّراقِيَ وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاق وَتَجَلَّى مَلَكُ الْمَوْتِ لِقَبْضِهَا مِنْ حُجُبِ الْغُيُوبِ، وَرَمَاهَا عَنْ قَوْسِ الْمَنَايَا بِأَسْهُمِ وَحْشَةِ الْفِرَاقِ، وَدَافَ لَهَا مِنْ ذَعَافِ الْمَوْتِ كَأْساً مَسْمُومَةَ الْمَذَاقِ، وَدَنا مِنَّا إلَى الآخِرَةِ رَحِيلٌ وَانْطِلاَقٌ، وَصَارَتِ الأعْمَالُ قَلاَئِـدَ فِي الأَعْنَاقِ، وَكَانَتِ الْقُبُورُ هِيَ الْمَأوَى إلَى مِيقَاتِ يَوْمِ التَّلاَقِ. أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ وَبَارِكْ لَنَا فِي حُلُولِ دَارِ البِلَى وَطُولِ الْمُقَامَـةِ بَيْنَ أَطْبَـاقِ الثَّـرى، وَاجْعَلِ القبُورَ بَعْدَ فِرَاقِ الدُّنْيَا خَيْرَ مَنَازِلِنَا، وَافْسَحْ لَنَا بِرَحْمَتِكَ فِي ضِيقِ مَلاَحِدِنَا، وَلا تَفْضَحْنَا فِي حَاضِرِي الْقِيَامَةِ بِمُوبِقَاتِ آثامِنَا، وَارْحَمْ بِالْقُرْانِ فِيْ مَوْقِفِ الْعَرْضِ عَلَيْكَ ذُلَّ مَقَامِنَا، وَثَبِّتْ بِهِ عِنْدَ اضْطِرَابِ جِسْرِ جَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَ الْمَجَازِ عَلَيْهَـا زَلَلَ أَقْدَامِنَا، وَنَوِّرْ بِهِ قَبْلَ الْبَعْثِ سُدَفَ قُبُورنا، وَنَجِّنَا بِهِ مِنْ كُلِّ كَرْب يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَشَدَائِدِ أَهْوَالِ يَوْمِ الطَّامَّةِ وَبَيِّضْ وُجُوهَنَا يَوْمَ تَسْوَدُّ وُجُوهُ الظَّلَمَةِ فِي يَوْمِ الْحَسْرَةِ وَالنَّدَامَةِ، وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا فِي صُدُورِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وُدّاً، وَلاَ تَجْعَلِ الْحَيَاةَ عَلَيْنَا نَكَداً. أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ كَمَا بَلَّغَ رِسَالَتَكَ، وَصَدَعَ بِأَمْرِكَ، وَنَصَحَ لِعِبَادِكَ. أللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ نَبِيَّنا صَلَواتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَقْرَبَ النِّبِيِّينَ مِنْكَ مَجْلِساً، وَأَمْكَنَهُمْ مِنْكَ شَفَاعَةً، وَأَجَلَّهُمْ عِنْدَكَ قَدْراً، وَأَوْجَهَهُمْ عِنْدَكَ جَاهَاً. أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِ مُحَمَّد وَشَرِّفْ بُنْيَانَهُ، وَعَظِّمْ بُرْهَانَهُ، وَثَقِّلْ مِيزَانَهُ، وَتَقَبَّلْ شَفَاعَتَهُ وَقَرِّبْ وَسِيلَتَهُ، وَبَيِّضْ وَجْهَهُ، وَأَتِمَّ نُورَهُ، وَارْفَعْ دَرَجَتَهُ، وَأَحْيِنَا عَلَى سُنَّتِهِ، وَتَوَفَّنَا عَلَى مِلَّتِهِ، وَخُذْ بِنَـا مِنْهَاجَـهُ، وَاسْلُكْ بِنَا سَبِيلَهُ، وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ طَاعَتِهِ، وَاحْشُرْنَا فِي زُمْرَتِهِ، وَأَوْرِدْنَا حَوْضَهُ، وَاسْقِنَا بِكَأسِهِ. أللَّهُمَّ وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ صَلاةً تُبَلِّغُهُ بِهَا أَفْضَلَ مَا يَأْمُلُ مِنْ خَيْرِكَ وَفَضْلِكَ وَكَرَامَتِكَ إنَّكَ ذُوْ رَحْمَة وَاسِعَة وَفَضْل كَرِيم. أللَّهُمَّ اجْزِهِ بِمَا بَلَّغَ مِنْ رِسَالاتِكَ وَأَدَّى مِنْ آيَاتِكَ وَنَصَحَ لِعِبَادِكَ وَجَاهَدَ فِي سَبِيلِكَ أَفْضَلَ مَا جَزَيْتَ أَحَداً مِنْ مَلائِكَتِكَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ وَأَنْبِيَائِكَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ الْمُصْطَفَيْنَ. وَالسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ الطَّيِّبِينَ الطَّاهِرِينَ وَرَحْمَةُ الله وَبَرَكَاتُهُ.

1O God, You hast helped me complete Your Book,
2which You sent down as a light and appointed as a guardian
3over every book You hast sent down,
4preferring it over every narrative which You hast recounted,
5a separator, through which You hast separated Your lawful from Your unlawful,
6a Qur'an, through which You hast made plain the approaches to Your ordinances,
7a book, which You hast distinguished very distinctly for Your servants,
8a revelation, which You hast sent down, a sending down, upon Your prophet Muhammad (Your blessings be upon him and his Household).
9You appointed it a light through following which we may be guided from the shadows of error and ignorance,
10a healing for him who turns ear toward hearing it with the understanding of attestation,
11a just balance whose tongue does not incline away from truth,
12a light of guidance whose proof is not extinguished before the witnesses,
13and a guidepost of deliverance, so that he who repairs straightway to its prescription will not go astray
14and he who clings to its preservation's handhold will not be touched by the hands of disasters.
15O God, since You hast given us help to recite it
16and made smooth the roughness of our tongues through the beauty of its expression,
17place us among those who observe it as it should be observed,
18serve You by adhering in submission to the firm text of its verses,
19and seek refuge in admitting both its ambiguous parts and the elucidations of its clear signs!
20O God, You sent it down upon Your prophet
21Muhammad (God bless him and his household) in summary form,
22You inspired him with the science of its wonders to complement it,
23You made us the heirs of its knowledge as interpreters,
24You made us to surpass him who is ignorant of its knowledge,
25and You gave us strength over it to raise us above those not able to carry it.
26O God, just as You hast appointed our hearts as its carriers
27and made known to us through Your mercy its nobility and excellence,
28so also bless Muhammad, its preacher,
29and his Household, its guardians,
30and place us among those who confess that it has come from You,
31lest doubt about attesting to it assail us,
32or deviation from its straightforward path shake us!
33O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
34and make us one of those who hold fast to its cord,
35seek haven from its ambiguities in its fortified stronghold,
36rest in the shadow of its wing,
37find guidance in the brightness of its morning,
38follow the shining of its disclosure,
39acquire light from its lamp,
40and beg not guidance from any other!
41O God, just as through it You hast set up Muhammad as a guidepost to point to You
42and through his Household You hast made clear Your good pleasure's roads to You,
43so also bless Muhammad and his Household
44and make the Qur'an our mediation to the noblest stations of Your honour,
45a ladder by which we may climb to the place of safety,
46a cause for our being repaid with deliverance at the Plain of Resurrection,
47and a means whereby we may reach the bliss of the House of Permanence!
48O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,
49lessen for us through the Qur'an the weight of heavy sins,
50give to us the excellent qualities of the pious,
51and make us follow the tracks of those who stood before You
52in the watches of the night and the ends of the day,
53such that You purifiest us from every defilement through its purification
54and makest us to follow the tracks of those who have taken illumination from its light
55and whom expectation has not distracted from works, cutting them off through its delusions' deceptions!
56O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
57and appoint the Qur'an for us an intimate in the shadows of nights
58and a guardian against the instigations of Satan and confusing thoughts,
59for our feet an obstruction from passing to acts of disobedience,
60for our tongues a silencer without blight preventing a plunge into falsehood,
61for our limbs a restrainer from committing sins,
62and for the scrutiny of heedfulness rolled up in heedlessness an unroller,
63such that You attachest to our hearts the understanding of the Qur'an's wonders
64and its restraining similitudes which immovable mountains in all their solidity
65were too weak to carry!
66O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
67and through the Qur'an make permanent the rightness of our outward selves,
68veil the ideas of confusing thoughts from the soundness of our innermost minds,
69wash away the dirt of our hearts and the ties of our heavy sins,
70gather our scattered affairs,
71quench the thirst of our burning heat in the standing place of the presentation to You,
72and clothe us in the robes of security on the Day of the Greatest Terror at our uprising!
73God, bless Muhammad and his Household
74and through the Qur'an redress our lack - our destitution in poverty
75drive toward us the comforts of life and an abundance of plentiful provisions,
76turn aside blameworthy character traits and base moral qualities,
77and preserve us from the pit of unbelief and the motives for hypocrisy,
78such that the Qur'an may be for us at the resurrection a leader to Your good pleasure and Your gardens,
79for us in this world a protector against Your displeasure and transgressing Your bounds
80and for what is with You a witness by its declaring lawful the lawful and its declaring unlawful the unlawful!
81O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
82and through the Qur'an make easy for our souls at death the distress of the driving,
83the effort of the moaning, and the succession of the rattling,
84'when souls reach the throats' (ref.75:26) "and it is said, 'Where is the enchanter"? (75:27)';
85when the angel of death discloses himself to seize them from behind the veils of unseen things,
86letting loose at them from the bow of destinies the arrows of the terror of lonesome separation,
87and mixing for them from sudden death a cup poisoned to the taste;
88and when departure and release for the hereafter come close to us,
89works become collars around the necks,
90and the graves become the haven until the appointed time of the Day of Encounter!
91O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,
92make blessed for us the arrival at the house of decay
93and the drawn out residence between the layers of the earth,
94appoint the graves, after separation from this world, the best of our waystations,
95make roomy for us through Your mercy the narrowness of our tombs,
96and disgrace us not among those present at the Resurrection through our ruinous sins!
97Through the Qur'an have mercy upon the lowliness of our station at the standing place of presentation to You,
98make firm the slips of our feet during the shaking of the bridge across hell
99on the day of passage over it,
100illuminate the darkness of our graves before the Uprising,
101and deliver us from every distress on the Day of Resurrection
102and from the hardships of terrors on the Day of Disaster!
103Whiten our faces on the day when the faces of wrongdoers are blackened
104during the Day of Regret and Remorse,
105appoint love for us in the breasts of the faithful,
106and make not life for us troublesome!
107O God, bless Muhammad, Your servant and Your messenger,
108just as He delivered Your message, executed Your command, and counselled Your servants!
109O God, make our Prophet (Your blessings be upon him
110and his Household) on the Day of Resurrection the nearest of the prophets to You in seat,
111the ablest of them before You with intercession, the greatest of them with You in measure,
112and the most eminent of them with You in rank!
113O God, bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, ennoble his edifice,
114magnify his proof, make weighty his balance,
115accept his intercession, bring near his mediation,
116whiten his face, complete his light,
117and raise his degree! Make us live according to his Sunna
118make us die in his creed, take us on his road,
119make us travel his path, place us among the people who obey him,
120muster us in his band,
121lead us to up his pool, and give us to drink of his cup!
122And bless Muhammad and his Household,
123with a blessing through which You wilt take him to the most excellent
124of what He hopes of Your good, Your bounty, and Your generosity!
125You art Possessor of boundless mercy and generous bounty.
126O God, repay him for Your messages which he delivered,
127Your signs which he passed on, the good counsel he gave to Your servants,
128and the struggle he undertook in Your way, with the best You hast repaid
129any of Your angels brought nigh and Your prophets sent out and chosen!
130And upon him and his Household, the good, the pure, be peace,
131God's mercy, and His blessings!
