Imam Zayn al-`abidin (`a) is reported to have said to his sons: Whenever one of you is inflicted by a misfortune or troubled by a crisis, he should perform the ritual ablution (wudu') as perfectly as possible, offer a two-unit or four-unit prayer, and say the following supplicatory prayer thereafter:
O target of all complaints!
- 2
O hearer of all confidential talks!
- 3
O witness of all gatherings!
- 4
O knower of all hidden things!
- 5
O repelling of whatever tribulation You will to repel!
- 6
O friend of Abraham!

O chooser of Muhammad,

may Allah bless him and his Household!

whose stratagem has failed,

O most merciful of all those who show mercy!
