Yasir, a servant of Caliph Ma'mun, narrated: When Imam al-Ridha (peace be upon him) entered the palace of Hamid ibn Qahtaba, he removed his clothes and handed them to Hamid. Hamid then gave them to his maidservant for washing. Shortly thereafter, the maid returned with a piece of paper, saying she had found it in the collar of the Imam's shirt. She handed it to Hamid, who then presented it to the Imam, saying: "May I be your ransom! This maid has found a written note in the collar of your shirt. What is it?" The Imam replied: "It is an amulet (taʿwīdh) that I never part with." Hamid asked: "Could you honor us by sharing it?" The Imam said: "This is an amulet that, when kept in one's pocket, wards off calamities and serves as protection against the accursed Satan." He then recited the text of the amulet, which begins:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in the Most Gracious from you, whether you are pious or not. I take refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, over your hearing and your sight. You have no power over me, nor over my hearing, nor over my sight, nor over my hair, nor over my skin, nor over my flesh, nor over my blood, nor over my brain. Nor on my nerves, nor on my bones, nor on my wealth, nor on what my Lord has provided me

I have veiled between you and me with the veil of prophethood with which the prophets of Allah veiled themselves from the tyrants and the Pharaohs. Gabriel is on my right, Michael is on my left, Israfil is behind me, and Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) is in front of me. Allah is aware of me, and He protects you from me and protects Satan from me. O Allah, do not let his ignorance overcome Your compassion, so that he provokes me and makes me look down. O Allah, to You I have sought refuge, O Allah, to You I have sought refuge, O Allah, to You I have sought refuge.
