Sahifa Sajjadiya 12: Confession and Seeking Repentance

وَتَحْدُونِي عَلَيْهَا خَلَّةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ

Wa-taḥdūnī ‘alayhā khallatun wāḥidah

Yet one quality drives me toward it.

يَحْجُبُنِي أَمْرٌ أَمَرْتَ بِهِ فَأَبْطَأْتُ عَنْهُ

Yaḥjubunī amrun amarta bihi fa-abṭa’tu ‘anhu

I am held back by a command You ordered, yet I delayed.

وَنَهْيٌ نَهَيْتَنِي عَنْهُ فَأَسْرَعْتُ إِلَيْهِ

Wa-nahyun nahaytanī ‘anhu fa-asra‘tu ilayhi

And a prohibition You forbade me, yet I hastened toward it.

وَنِعْمَةٌ أَنْعَمْتَ بِهَا عَلَيَّ فَقَصَّرْتُ فِي شُكْرِهَا

Wa-ni‘matun an‘amta bihā ‘alayya fa-qaṣṣartu fī shukrihā

And a blessing You bestowed upon me, yet I fell short in thanking it.

وَيَحْدُونِي عَلَى مَسْأَلَتِكَ تَفَضُّلُكَ عَلَى مَنْ أَقْبَلَ بِوَجْهِهِ إِلَيْكَ

Wa-yaḥdūnī ‘alā mas’alatika tafaḍḍuluka ‘alā man aqbala bi-wajhihi ilayk

But what drives me to ask You is Your grace upon those who turn their faces toward You.

وَوَفَدَ بِحُسْنِ ظَنِّهِ إِلَيْكَ

Wa-wafada bi-ḥusni ẓannihi ilayk

And approach You with good expectation.

إِذْ جَمِيعُ إِحْسَانِكَ تَفَضُّلٌ، وَإِذْ كُلُّ نِعَمِكَ ابْتِدَاءٌ

Idh jamī‘u iḥsānika tafaḍḍul, wa-idh kullu ni‘amika ibtida’

For all of Your kindness is grace, and all of Your blessings are without cause.

فَهَا أَنَا ذَا يَا إِلَهِي وَاقِفٌ بِبَابِ عِزِّكَ وُقُوفَ الْمُسْتَسْلِمِ الذَّلِيلِ

Fahā anā dhā yā ilāhī wāqifun bi-bābi ‘izzika wuqūfa al-mustaslimi al-dhalīl

So here I am, my God, standing at the door of Your might like a submissive, humbled one.

وَسَائِلُكَ عَلَى الْحَيَاءِ مِنِّي سُؤَالَ الْبَائِسِ الْمُعِيلِ

Wa-sā’iluka ‘alā al-ḥayā’i minnī su’āla al-bā’isi al-mu‘īl

And asking You in shame, like the needy, destitute beggar.

مُقِرٌّ لَكَ بِأَنِّي لَمْ أَسْتَسْلِمْ وَقْتَ إِحْسَانِكَ إِلَّا بِالِاقْلَاعِ عَنْ عِصْيَانِكَ

Muqirrul laka bi-annī lam astaslim waqt iḥsānika illā bil-iqlā‘i ‘an ‘iṣyānika

Confessing that I did not submit during Your kindness, except by abandoning disobedience to You.

وَلَمْ أَخْلُ فِي الْحَالَاتِ كُلِّهَا مِنِ امْتِنَانِكَ

Wa-lam akhlu fī al-ḥālāt kullihā min imtinānika

And in all states, I was never without Your favor.

فَهَلْ يَنْفَعُنِي يَا إِلَهِي إِقْرَارِي عِنْدَكَ بِسُوءِ مَا اكْتَسَبْتُ؟

Fahal yanfa‘unī yā ilāhī iq’rārī ‘indaka bisū’i mā ik’tasabt

So will my confession before You of the evil I have earned benefit me?

أَمْ أَوْجَبْتَ لِي فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا سُخْطَكَ؟

Am awjabta lī fī maqāmī hādhā sukhṭak

Or have You decreed upon me in this state Your anger?

أَمْ لَزِمَنِي فِي وَقْتِ دُعَائِي مَقْتُكَ؟

Am lazimanī fī waqt du‘ā’ī maqtuk

Or does Your wrath cling to me when I supplicate?

سُبْحَانَكَ! لَا أَيْأَسُ مِنْكَ وَقَدْ فَتَحْتَ لِيَ بَابَ التَّوْبَةِ إِلَيْكَ

Subḥānaka! Lā ay’asu minka wa-qad fataḥta lī bāba al-tawbati ilayk

Glory be to You! I will never despair of You, for You have opened for me the door of repentance toward You.

بَلْ أَقُولُ مَقَالَ الْعَبْدِ الذَّلِيلِ الظَّالِمِ لِنَفْسِهِ الْمُسْتَخِفِّ بِحُرْمَةِ رَبِّهِ

Bal aqūlu maqāla al-‘abdi al-dhalīli al-ẓālimi linafsihi al-mustakhiffi bi-ḥurmati rabbihi

Rather, I say the words of a lowly servant who has wronged himself, who belittled the sanctity of his Lord.

الَّذِي عَظُمَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ فَجَلَّتْ وَأَدْبَرَتْ أَيَّامُهُ فَوَلَّتْ

Alladhī ‘aẓumat dhunūbuhu fa-jallat wa-adbarat ayyāmuhu fa-wallat

The one whose sins have become great and immense, and whose days have passed and gone.

حَتَّى إِذَا رَأى مُدَّةَ الْعَمَلِ قَدِ انْقَضَتْ

Ḥattā idhā ra’ā muddata al-‘amali qad inqaḍat

Until he sees the time for deeds has ended.

وَغَايَةَ الْعُمُرِ قَدِ انْتَهَتْ

Wa-ghāyata al-‘umuri qad intahat

And the limit of his lifespan has finished.

وَأَيْقَنَ أَنَّهُ لَا مَحِيصَ لَهُ مِنْكَ وَلاَ مَهْرَبَ لَهُ عَنْكَ

Wa-ayqana annahu lā maḥīṣa lahu minka wa-lā mahraba lahu ‘anka

And he is certain that there is no escape for him from You, and no refuge away from You.

تَلَقَّاكَ بِالإنَابَةِ وَأَخْلَصَ لَكَ التَّوْبَةَ

Talaqqāka bi-l-inābah wa-akhlaṣa laka al-tawbata

He comes to meet You with turning (back), and offers You sincere repentance.

فَقَامَ إِلَيْكَ بِقَلْبٍ طَاهِرٍ نَقِيٍّ

Faqāma ilayka bi-qalbin ṭāhirin naqiyy

So he stands before You with a pure, clean heart.

ثُمَّ دَعَاكَ بِصَوْتٍ حَائِلٍ خَفِيٍّ

Thumma daʿāka bi-ṣawtin ḥāʾilin khafiyyin

Then he calls upon You with a faint, hidden voice.

قَدْ تَطَأْطَأَ لَكَ فَانْحَنَى، وَنَكَّسَ رَأْسَهُ فَانْثَنَى

Qad taṭāṭa’a laka fa-inḥanā, wa-nakkasa ra’sahu fa-inthanā

He has bowed down to You and bent low, lowering his head and folding himself.

قَدْ أَرْعَشَتْ خَشْيَتُهُ رِجْلَيْهِ، وَغَرَّقَتْ دُمُوعُهُ خَدَّيْهِ

Qad ar‘ashat khashyatuhu rijlayh, wa-gharraqat dumū‘uhu khaddayh

His fear has made his legs tremble, and his tears have flooded his cheeks.

يَدْعُوكَ بِيَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Yad‘ūka biyā arḥama al-rāḥimīn

Calling upon You: “O Most Merciful of the merciful.”

وَيَا أَرْحَمَ مَنِ انْتَابَهُ الْمُسْتَرْحِمُونَ

Wa-yā arḥama mani intābahu al-mustarḥimūn

And O most merciful to whom those seeking mercy turn.

وَيَا أَعْطَفَ مَنْ أَطَافَ بِهِ الْمُسْتَغْفِرُونَ

Wa-yā a‘ṭafa man aṭāfa bihi al-mustaghfirūn

And O most compassionate to whom the seekers of forgiveness gather.

وَيَا مَنْ عَفْوُهُ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ نِقْمَتِهِ

Wa-yā man ‘afwuhu aktharu min niqmatih

And O He whose pardon is greater than His punishment.

وَيَا مَنْ رِضَاهُ أَوْفَرُ مِنْ سَخَطِهِ

Wa-yā man riḍāhu awfaru min sakhaṭih

And O He whose pleasure is more abundant than His wrath.

وَيَا مَنْ تَحَمَّدَ إِلَى خَلْقِهِ بِحُسْنِ التَّجاوُزِ

Wa-yā man taḥammada ilā khalqihi bi-ḥusni al-tajāwuz

And O He who shows gratitude to His creation through gracious forbearance.

وَيَا مَنْ عَوَّدَ عِبادَهُ قَبُولَ الإنَابَةِ ،

wa yaa man a'w-wada i'baadahoo qaboolal-inaabah

O He who has accustomed His servants to the acceptance of their repeated turning!

وَيَا مَنِ اسْتَصْلَحَ فَاسِدَهُمْ بِالتَّوْبَةِ

Wa-yā man istaṣlaḥa fāsidahum bit-tawbah

O He who reformed their corruption through repentance

وَيَا مَنْ رَضِيَ مِنْ فِعْلِهِمْ بِالْيَسيرِ

Wa-yā man raḍiya min fiʿlihim bil-yasīr

O He who was satisfied from their deeds with little

وَيَا مَنْ كَافى قَلِيْلَهُمْ بِالْكَثِيرِ

Wa-yā man kāfā qalīlahum bil-kathīr

O He who rewarded their little with much

وَيَا مَنْ ضَمِنَ لَهُمْ إجَابَةَ الدُّعاءِ

Wa-yā man ḍamina lahum ijābata ad-duʿāʾ

O He who guaranteed for them the answering of prayer

وَيَا مَنْ وَعَدَهُمْ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بِتَفَضُّلِهِ حُسْنَ الْجَزاءِ

Wa-yā man waʿadahum ʿalā nafsihi bita-faḍḍulihi ḥusna al-jazāʾ

O He who promised them, by His grace, a good reward

مَا أَنَا بِأَعْصَى مَنْ عَصَاكَ فَغَفَرْتَ لَهُ

Mā anā bi-aʿṣā man ʿaṣāka faghafarta lahu

I am not more disobedient than one You forgave

وَمَا أَنَا بِأَلْوَمِ مَنِ اعْتَذَرَ إلَيْكَ فَقَبِلْتَ مِنْهُ

Wa-mā anā bi-alwama mani iʿtadhara ilayka faqabilta minhu

Nor am I more blameworthy than one You accepted

وَمَا أَنَا بِأَظْلَمِ مَنْ تَابَ إلَيْكَ فَعُدْتَ عَلَيْهِ

Wa-mā anā bi-aẓlama man tāba ilayka faʿudta ʿalayhi

Nor am I more unjust than one You forgave after repentance

أَتُوبُ إلَيْكَ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا تَوْبَةَ نَادِم

Atūbu ilayka fī maqāmī hādhā tawbata nādim

I repent to You now with the repentance of one regretful

عَلَى مَا فَرَطَ مِنْهُ مُشْفِق مِمَّا اجْتَمَعَ عَلَيْهِ

ʿAlā mā faraṭa minhu mushfiq mimmā ijtamaʿa ʿalayh

For what has been neglected, fearful of what has gathered

خَالِصِ الْحَيَاءِ مِمَّا وَقَعَ فِيْهِ

Khāliṣi al-ḥayāʾi mimmā waqaʿa fīhi

With pure shame for what has occurred

عَالِم بِأَنَّ الْعَفْوَ عَنِ الذَّنْبِ الْعَظِيمِ لاَ يَتَعَاظَمُكَ

ʿĀlim bi-anna al-ʿafwa ʿani adh-dhanbi al-ʿaẓīm lā yataʿāẓamuka

Knowing that pardoning the great sin does not overwhelm You

وَأَنَّ التَّجَاوُزَ عَنِ الإثْمِ الْجَلِيْلِ لا يَسْتَصْعِبُكَ

Wa-anna at-tajāwuza ʿani al-ithmi al-jalīl lā yastaṣʿibuka

And that overlooking the grave offense is not difficult for You

وَأَنَّ احْتِمَالَ الْجنَايَاتِ الْفَـاحِشَةِ لا يَتَكَأَّدُكَ

Wa-anna iḥtimāla al-janāyāti al-fāḥishati lā yatakaʾaduka

And that bearing the outrageous crimes does not burden You

وَأَنَّ أَحَبَّ عِبَادِكَ إلَيْكَ مَنْ تَرَكَ الاسْتِكْبَارَ عَلَيْكَ

Wa-anna aḥabba ʿibādika ilayka man taraka al-istkibāra ʿalayk

And that Your most beloved servants are those who abandon arrogance

وَجَانَبَ الإِصْرَارَ، وَلَزِمَ الاسْتِغْفَارَ

Wa-jānaba al-iṣrār wa-lazima al-istighfār

And avoid persistence, and cling to seeking forgiveness

وَأَنَا أَبْرَأُ إلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنْ أَسْتَكْبِرَ

Wa-anā abraʾu ilayka min an astakbira

And I disavow before You from arrogance

وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أصِـرَّ

Wa-aʿūdhu bika min an aṣirra

And I seek refuge in You from persistence in sin

وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا قَصَّرْتُ فِيهِ

Wa-astaghfiruka limā qaṣṣartu fīhi

And I ask forgiveness for my shortcomings

وَأَسْتَعِينُ بِكَ عَلَى مَا عَجَزْتُ عَنْهُ

Wa-astaʿīnu bika ʿalā mā ʿajaztu ʿanhu

And I seek help from You in what I cannot do

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O Allah, bless Muhammad and his family

وَهَبْ لِي مَا يَجبُ عَلَيَّ لَكَ

Wa-hab lī mā yajibu ʿalayya lak

And grant me what I owe to You

وَعَافِنِي مِمَّا أَسْتَوْجِبُهُ مِنْكَ

Wa-ʿāfinī mimmā astawjibuhu minka

And pardon me from what I deserve from You

وَأجِرْنِي مِمَّا يَخَافُهُ أَهْلُ الإساءَةِ

Wa-ajirnī mimmā yakhāfuhu ahlu al-isāʾah

And protect me from what the people of evil fear

فَإنَّكَ مَلِيءٌ بِالْعَفْوِ، مَرْجُوٌّ لِلْمَغْفِرَةِ

Fa-innaka malīʾun bil-ʿafwi marjūwun lil-maghfirah

For You are full of pardon, hoped for forgiveness

مَعْرُوفٌ بِالتَّجَاوُزِ

Maʿrūfun bit-tajāwuz

Well-known for overlooking faults

لَيْسَ لِحَاجَتِي مَطْلَبٌ سِوَاكَ

Laysa li-ḥājatī maṭlabun siwāk

There is no one else to seek for my need

وَلا لِذَنْبِي غَافِرٌ غَيْرُكَ، حاشَاكَ

Wa-lā lidhanbī ghāfirun ghayruka ḥāshāk

And none forgives my sin except You—far be it from others

وَلاَ أَخَافُ عَلَى نَفْسِي إلاّ إيَّاكَ

Wa-lā akhāfu ʿalā nafsī illā iyyāk

And I fear none for my soul except You

إنَّكَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوَى وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ

Innaka ahlu at-taqwā wa-ahlu al-maghfirah

Indeed, You are worthy of piety and forgiveness

صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِ مُحَمَّد

Ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa-āli Muḥammad

Send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad

وَاقْض حَاجَتِي وَأَنْجِحْ طَلِبَتِي

Wa-qḍi ḥājātī wa-anjih ṭalibatī

Fulfill my need and grant my request success

وَاغْفِرْ ذَنْبِي، وَآمِنْ خَوْفَ نَفْسِي

Wa-ghfir dhanbī wa-āmin khawfa nafsī

Forgive my sin, and grant safety to my soul’s fear

إنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْء قَدِيرٌ

Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr

Indeed, You are powerful over all things

وَذلِكَ عَلَيْكَ يَسِيرٌ آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Wa-dhālika ʿalayka yasīrun āmīn rabba al-ʿālamīn

And that is easy for You—Amen, Lord of the worlds

وَيَا مَنْ عَوَّدَ عِبَادَهُ قَبُولَ التَّوْبَةِ

Wa-yā man ‘awwada ‘ibādahu qabūla al-tawbati

And O He who has accustomed His servants to accepting repentance.

وَيَا مَنْ أَلْهَمَ عِبَادَهُ ذِكْرَهُ وَشُكْرَهُ

Wa-yā man alhama ‘ibādahu dhikrahu wa-shukrahu

And O He who has inspired His servants to remember and thank Him.

وَيَا مَنْ جَعَلَ لَهُمْ مَفَازًا مِمَّا اقْتَرَفُوا بِفَضْلِهِ

Wa-yā man ja‘ala lahum mafāzan mimmā iq’tarafū bi-faḍlih

And O He who has made for them deliverance from what they committed, by His grace.

وَيَا مَنْ سَتَرَ ذُنُوبَهُمْ عَلى رَغْمِهِمْ

Wa-yā man satara dhunūbahum ‘alā raghmihim

And O He who concealed their sins despite their persistence.

وَيَا مَنْ جَاوَزَ خَطَايَاهُمْ عَلى كَرَمِهِ

Wa-yā man jāwaza khaṭāyāhum ‘alā karamih

And O He who has overlooked their faults with His generosity.

وَيَا مَنْ لَمْ يُؤَاخِذْهُمْ بِالْجَرَائِمِ وَالزَّلَلِ

Wa-yā man lam yu’ākhidhhum bi-l-jarā’imi wa-z-zalal

And O He who has not punished them for crimes and slips.

وَيَا مَنْ رَغِبَ إلَيْهِ الْخَائِفُونَ

Wa-yā man raghiba ilayhi al-khā’ifūn

And O He to whom the fearful turn in hope.

وَيَا مَنْ لَجَأَ إلَيْهِ الْمُرْتَجُونَ

Wa-yā man laja’a ilayhi al-murtajūn

And O He to whom those with hope seek refuge.

وَيَا مَنْ صَدَقَ فِي وَعْدِهِ وَضَمِنَ الْمَغْفِرَةَ بِمَنِّهِ

Wa-yā man ṣadaqa fī wa‘dih wa-ḍamina al-maghfirata bi-mannih

And O He who is true in His promise, and who guaranteed forgiveness through His grace.

وَيَا مَنْ بَسَطَ يَدَهُ بِالرَّحْمَةِ

Wa-yā man basata yada-hu bi-r-raḥmah

And O He who stretches out His hand with mercy.

وَيَا مَنْ وَسِعَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ فَضْلُهُ

Wa-yā man wasi‘a kulla shay’in faḍluh

And O He whose bounty has encompassed all things.

وَيَا مَنْ سَبَقَ غَضَبَهُ رِضَاهُ

Wa-yā man sabaqa ghaḍabahu riḍāh

And O He whose pleasure has outstripped His wrath.

وَيَا مَنْ سَبَقَتْ رَحْمَتُهُ عِقَابَهُ

Wa-yā man sabaqat raḥmatuhu ‘iqābah

And O He whose mercy has preceded His punishment.

وَيَا مَنْ تَعَاطَفَ عَلَى عِبَادِهِ بِإِحْسَانِهِ

Wa-yā man ta‘āṭafa ‘alā ‘ibādihi bi-iḥsānih

And O He who shows compassion to His servants through His kindness.

وَيَا مَنْ فَتَحَ لِخَلْقِهِ بَابًا إِلَى عَفْوِهِ

Wa-yā man fataḥa li-khalqihi bāban ilā ‘afwih

And O He who has opened for His creation a door to His pardon.

وَيَا مَنْ قَالَ وَقَوْلُهُ الْحَقُّ وَوَعْدُهُ الصِّدْقُ

Wa-yā man qāla wa-qawluhu al-ḥaqqu wa-wa‘duhu aṣ-ṣidq

And O He who has spoken, and His word is truth, and His promise is sure.

وَيَا مَنْ قَالَ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ

Wa-yā man qāla: ud‘ūnī astajib lakum

And O He who has said: "Call upon Me, I will answer you."

وَيَا مَنْ قَالَ وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ

Wa-yā man qāla: wa-idhā sa’alaka ‘ibādī ‘annī fa-innī qarīb

And O He who has said: "And when My servants ask you about Me, indeed I am near."

أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ

Ujību da‘wata ad-dā‘i idhā da‘ān

"I answer the call of the caller when he calls upon Me."

وَيَا مَنْ قَالَ مَا يَفْعَلُ اللهُ بِعَذَابِكُمْ إِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ وَآمَنْتُمْ

Wa-yā man qāla: mā yaf‘alu -llāhu bi-‘adhābikum in shakartum wa-āmantum

And O He who has said: "What would Allah do with your punishment if you are grateful and believe?"

وَيَا مَنْ جَعَلَ الشُّكْرَ ثَمَنًا لِزِيَادَتِهِ

Wa-yā man ja‘ala ash-shukra thamanan li-ziyādatih

And O He who has made gratitude the price for His increase.

وَيَا مَنْ جَعَلَ التَّوَكُّلَ عَلَيْهِ سَبَبًا لِكِفَايَتِهِ

Wa-yā man ja‘ala at-tawakkula ‘alayhi sababan li-kifāyatih

And O He who has made reliance upon Him the cause for sufficiency.

وَيَا مَنْ جَعَلَ طَاعَتَهُ وَوِلاَيَةَ أَوْلِيَائِهِ حِصْنًا حَصِينًا لِمَنْ دَخَلَهُ

Wa-yā man ja‘ala ṭā‘atahu wa-wilāyata awliyā’ihi ḥiṣnan ḥaṣīnan li-man dakhala-hu

And O He who has made obedience to Him and loyalty to His friends a fortified fortress for whoever enters it.

اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma fa-ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْعَلْنَا مِمَّنْ يَحُصِّنُ نَفْسَهُ بِطَاعَتِكَ وَوِلاَيَةِ أَوْلِيَائِكَ

Wa-j‘alnā mimman yaḥuṣṣinu nafsahu bi-ṭā‘atika wa-wilāyati awliyā’ika

And make us among those who fortify themselves with Your obedience and the loyalty of Your friends.

حَتَّى تُنْجِيَهُ مِنْ مَقْتِكَ وَمَسَاخِطِكَ

Ḥattā tunjiyahu min maqtika wa-masākhiṭik

Until You save him from Your wrath and Your displeasure.

اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma fa-ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْعَلْنَا مِمَّنْ يَتَنَاجَى بِمَنَاجَاتِكَ

Wa-j‘alnā mimman yatanājā bi-munājātik

And make us among those who converse with You in supplication.

وَيَصْطَلِحُ عَلَى صِدْقِ الْمَعْرِفَةِ بِكَ

Wa-yaṣṭaliḥu ‘alā ṣidqi al-ma‘rifati bika

And reconcile upon the truth of knowing You.

وَلا تُلْهِهِ الدُّنْيَا عَنْكَ

Wa-lā tulhihi ad-dunyā ‘anka

And whom the world does not distract away from You.

وَلا يَشْغَلُهُ عَنْكَ غَافِلَةٌ

Wa-lā yashghaluhu ‘anka ghāfilah

And whom no heedlessness diverts away from You.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O Allah, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْعَلْنَا مِمَّنْ أَخْلَصَ لَكَ عَمَلَهُ

Wa-j‘alnā mimman akhlaṣa laka ‘amalahu

And make us among those who sincerely dedicate their deeds to You.

وَلا يُرِيدُ بِهِ سِوَاكَ

Wa-lā yurīdu bihi siwāk

And does not desire through it anyone but You.

وَاعْمُرْ قُلُوبَنَا بِطَاعَتِكَ

Wa‘mur qulūbanā bi-ṭā‘atika

Fill our hearts with obedience to You.

وَلا تُخْزِنَا بِمَعْصِيَتِكَ

Wa-lā tukhzinā bi-ma‘ṣiyatika

And do not disgrace us through disobedience to You.

وَارْزُقْنَا مَوَدَّةَ أَوْلِيَائِكَ

Wa-rzuqnā mawaddata awliyā’ika

And grant us the love of Your friends.

وَاسْتَعْمِلْنَا فِيمَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضَى

Wa-sta‘milnā fīmā tuḥibbu wa-tarḍā

And employ us in that which You love and are pleased with.

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ خِتَامَ أَعْمَالِنَا رِضَاكَ

Allāhumma aj‘al khitāma a‘mālinā riḍāk

O Allah, make the end of our deeds Your good pleasure.

وَاقْطَعْ أَيَّامَنَا فِي خَيْرٍ مِنْكَ وَرِضْوَانٍ

Wa-qṭa‘ ayyāmanā fī khayrin minka wa-riḍwān

And conclude our days with goodness from You and satisfaction.

إنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Inna-ka ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr

Surely, You have power over all things.

يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Yā arḥama ar-rāḥimīn

O Most Merciful of the merciful.

وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

Wa-ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammadin wa-āli Muḥammad

And send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

وَاقْضِ حَاجَتِي وَأَنْجِحْ طَلِبَتِي

Wa-qḍi ḥājatī wa-anjiḥ ṭalabatī

And fulfill my need and grant success to my request.

وَاغْفِرْ ذَنْبِي وَآمِنْ خَوْفَ نَفْسِي

Wa-ghfir dhanbī wa-āmin khawf nafsī

And forgive my sins and secure me from the fear of myself.

إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Inna-ka ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr

Indeed, You are able over all things.

وَذَلِكَ عَلَيْكَ يَسِيرٌ

Wa-dhālika ‘alayka yasīr

And that is easy for You.

آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Āmīn rabba al-‘ālamīn

Ameen, Lord of the worlds.

أَللَّهُمَّ إنَّهُ يَحْجُبُنِي عَنْ مَسْأَلَتِكَ خِلاَلٌ ثَلاثٌ

al-laahum-ma in-nahoo yah'-jubunee a'm-mas-alatika khilaalun thalaath wa tah'-doonee a'lay-haa khal-latoo-waah'idah

O God, three traits have prevented me from asking Thee

وَتَحْدُونِي عَلَيْهَا خَلَّةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ ،

and one trait has urged me on:

يَحْجُبُنِي أَمْرٌ أَمَرْتَ بِهِ فَأَبْطَأتُ عَنْهُ،

yah'-jubunee am-run amar-ta bihee faab-t'aa-tu a'n-h

I am prevented by a command Thou hast commanded in which I have been slow,

وَنَهْيٌ نَهَيْتَنِي عَنْهُ فَأَسْرَعْتُ إلَيْهِ،

wa nah-yun-nahay-tanee a'n-hoo faas-raa'-tu ilay-h

a prohibition Thou hast prohibited toward which I have hurried,

وَنِعْمَةٌ أَنْعَمْتَ بِهَا عَلَيَّ فَقَصَّرْتُ فِي شُكْرِهَـا.

wa nia'-matun an-a'm-ta bihaa a'lay-ya faqas'-s'ar-tu fee shuk-rihaa

and a favour through which Thou hast favoured for which I have not given sufficient thanks.

وَيَحْدُونِي عَلَى مَسْأَلَتِكَ تَفَضُّلُكَ

wa yah'-doonee a'laa mas-alatika tafaz''-z''uluka

I am urged to ask Thee by Thy gratuitous bounty

عَلَى مَنْ أَقْبَلَ بِوَجْهِهِ إلَيْكَ،

a'laa man aq-bala biwaj-hiheee ilay-k

upon him who turns his face toward Thee

وَوَفَدَ بِحُسْنِ ظَنِّـهِ إلَيْكَ،

wa wafada bih'us-ni z'an-niheee ilay-k

and comes to Thee with a good opinion,

إذْ جَمِيعُ إحْسَانِكَ تَفَضُّلٌ،

id' jameeu' ih'-saanika tafaz''-z''ul

since all Thy beneficence is gratuitous bounty

وَإذْ كُلُّ نِعَمِكَ ابْتِدَاءٌ.

wa id' kul-lu nia'mika ab-tidaaa-

and every one of Thy favours a new beginning!

فَهَا أَنَا ذَا يَا إلهِيْ وَاقِفٌ بِبَابِ عِزِّكَ

fahaaa ana d'aa yaaa ilaahee waaqifum-bibaabi i'z-zika

So here I am, my God, standing at the gate of Thy might,

وُقُوفَ المُسْتَسْلِمِ الذَّلِيْل، وَسَائِلُكَ عَلَى الْحَيَاءِ مِنّي

wqoofal-mus-tas-limid'-d'aleel wa saaa-iluka a'laal-h'ayaaa-i min-nee

the standing of the lowly, the surrendered, asking Thee in my shame,

سُؤَالَ الْبَائِسِ الْمُعِيْلِ. مُقـرٌّ لَكَ بأَنّي

soo-aalal-baaa-isil-mue'el muqir-rul-laka bin-nee

the asking of the destitute, the pitiful, admitting to Thee that

لَمْ أَسْتَسْلِمْ وَقْتَ إحْسَانِـكَ إلاَّ بِالاِقْلاَعِ عَنْ عِصْيَانِكَ،

lam as-tas-lim waq-ta ih'-saanika il-laa bil-iq-laai' a'n i's'-yaanik

at the time of Thy beneficence I surrendered not save through abstaining from disobedience toward Thee

وَلَمْ أَخْلُ فِي الْحَالاتِ كُلِّهَا مِنِ امْتِنَانِكَ.

wa lam akh-lu fil-h'aalaati kul-lihaa mini am-tinaanik

and in none of my states was I ever without Thy Kindness.

فَهَلْ يَنْفَعُنِي يَا إلهِي إقْرَارِي عِنْدَكَ بِسُوءِ مَا اكْتَسَبْتُ؟

fahal yanfau'nee yaaa ilaaheee iq-raaree i'ndaka bisooo-i mak-tasab-tu ? 6- Will it profit me, my God, to admit to Thee the evil of what I have earned?

Will my confession before You, O my God, of the evil that I have earned benefit me?

وَهَلْ يُنْجِيْنِي مِنْكَ اعْتِرَافِي لَكَ بِقَبِيْحِ مَا ارْتَكَبْتُ؟

Will it save me from Thee to confess the ugliness of what I have done?

أَمْ أَوْجَبْتَ لِي فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا سُخْطَكَ؟

am aw-jab-ta lee fee maqaamee had'aa sukh-t'aka?

Or wilt Thou impose upon me in this my stationThy displeasure?

أَمْ لَزِمَنِي فِي وَقْتِ دُعَائِي مَقْتُكَ؟

am lazimanee fee waq-ti dua'aa-ee maq-tuka?

Will Thy hate hold fast to me in the time of my supplication?

سُبْحَانَكَ! لاَ أَيْأَسُ مِنْكَ وَقَدْ فَتَحْتَ لِيَ بَابَ التَّوْبَةِ إلَيْكَ،

sub-h'aanaka laaa ay-asu minka waqad fatah'-ta lee baabat-taw-bati ilay-k

Glory be to Thee! I do not despair of Thee, for Thou hast opened the door of repentance toward Thyself.

بَلْ أَقُولُ مَقَالَ الْعَبْدِ الذَّلِيلِ الظَّالِمِ لِنَفْسِهِ

bal aqoolu maqaalal-a'b-did'-d'aleeli az'-z'aalimi linaf-sih

Rather, I say, the words of a lowly servant, having wronged himself

الْمُسْتَخِفِّ بِحُرْمَةِ رَبِّهِ

al-mus-takhif-fi bih'ur-mati rab-bih

and made light of his Lord's inviolability,

الَّذِي عَظُمَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ فَجَلَّتْ وَأَدْبَرَتْ أَيّامُهُ فَوَلَّتْ

al-lad'ee a'z'umat d'unoobuhoo fajal-lat-wa ad-barat ay-yaamuhoo fawal-lat-

and whose sins are dreadful, great,whose days have parted, fled,

حَتَّى إذَا رَأى مُدَّةَ الْعَمَلِ قَدِ انْقَضَتْ

h'at-taaa id'aa raaa mud-datal-a'mali qadi anqaz''at

until, when he sees the term of his works expired and the limit of his lifetime reached

وَغَايَةَ الْعُمُرِ قَدِ انْتَهَتْ ،

wa ghaayatal-u'muri qadi antahat

and knows with certainty that he has no escape from Thee,

وَأَيْقَنَ أَنَّهُ لا مَحيصَ لَهُ مِنْكَ ،وَلاَ مَهْرَبَ لَهُ عَنْكَ

wa ay-qana an-nahoo laa mah'ees'a lahoo mink wa laa mah-raba lahoo a'nk

no place to flee from Thee, he turns his face toward Thee in repeated turning,

تَلَقَّاكَ بِالإنَابَةِ ،وَأَخْلَصَ لَكَ التَّوْبَةَ

talaq-qaaka bil-inaabah wa akh-las'a lakat-taw-bah

makes his repentance toward Thee sincere,

، فَقَامَ إلَيْكَ بِقَلْبِ طَاهِر نَقِيٍّ

faqaama ilay-ka biqal-bin t'aahirin-naqee

stands before Thee with a pure and purified heart,t

ثُمَّ دَعَاكَ بِصَوْتٍ حَائِلٍ خَفِيٍّ،

Thumma daʿāka bi-ṣawtin ḥāʾilin khafiyyin

hen supplicates Thee with a feeble, quiet voice.

قَدْ تَطَأطَأَ لَكَ فَانْحَنى، وَنَكَّسَ رَأسَهُ فَانْثَنَى ،

qad t-tat'aa-t'aa laka fan-h'anaawa nak-kasa raa-sahoo faanthanaa

He is bowed before Thee, bent,his head lowered, thrown down,

قَدْ أَرْعَشَتْ خَشْيَتُهُ رِجْلَيْهِ، وَغَرَّقَتْ دُمُوعُهُ خَدَّيْهِ ،

qad sr-a'shat khash-yatuhoo rij-lay-h wa ghar-raqat d-dumoou'hoo khad-day-h

his legs shaking in fear,his tears flooding his cheeks.

يَدْعُوكَ بِيَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ وَيَا أَرْحَمَ مَنِ انْتَابَهُ الْمُسْتَرْحِمُونَ،

yad-u'wka beeaaa ar-h'amar-raah'imeen wa yaaa ar-h'ama mani antaabahul-mus-tar-h'imoon

He supplicates Thee: O Most Merciful of the merciful!O Most Merciful of those toward whom seekers of mercy keep on turning

وَيَا أَعْطَفَ مَنْ أَطَافَ بِهِ الْمُسْتَغْفِرُونَ ،

wa yaaa aa'-t'afa man at'aafa bihil-mus-tagh-firoon

O Tenderest of those around whom run seekers of forgiveness!

وَيَا مَنْ عَفْوُهُ أكْثَرُ مِنْ نِقْمَتِهِ،

wa yaa man a'f-wuhooo ak-tharu min-naqimatih

O He whose pardon is greater than His vengeance!

وَيَا مَنْ رِضَاهُ أَوْفَرُ مِنْ سَخَطِهِ،

wa yaa mar-riz''aahooo aw-faru min sakhat'ih

O He whose good pleasure is more abundant than His anger

وَيَا مَنْ تَحَمَّدَ إلَى خَلْقِهِ بِحُسْنِ التَّجاوُزِ ،

wa yaa man tah'am-mada ilaa khal-qihee bih'us-nit-tajaawuz

O He who seeks His creatures' praise with excellent forbearance!

وَيَا مَنْ عَوَّدَ عِبادَهُ قَبُولَ الإنَابَةِ ،

wa yaa man a'w-wada i'baadahoo qaboolal-inaabah

O He who has accustomed His servants to the acceptance of their repeated turning!

وَيَا مَنِ اسْتَصْلَحَ فَاسِدَهُمْ بِالتَّوْبَةِ

wa yaa mani as-tas'-lah'a faasidahum bit-taw-bah

O He who seeks to heal their corruption through repentance!

وَيَا مَنْ رَضِيَ مِنْ فِعْلِهِمْ بِالْيَسيرِ،

wa yaa mar-raz''eea min fia'-lihim bil-yaseer

O He who is pleased with the easy of their acts!

وَيَا مَنْ كَافى قَلِيْلَهُمْ بِالْكَثِيرِ،

wa yaa man kaafaa qaleelahum bil-katheer

O He who recompenses with the much their little!

وَيَا مَنْ ضَمِنَ لَهُمْ إجَابَةَ الدُّعاءِ،

wa yaa man z''amina lahum ijaabatad-dua'aa-i

O He who has made himself accountable to them to respond to supplication!

وَيَا مَنْ وَعَدَهُمْ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بِتَفَضُّلِهِ حُسْنَ الْجَزاءِ،

wa yaa maw-waa'dahum a'laa naf-sihee bitafaz''-z''ulihee h'us-nal-jazaaa-i

O He who pledged Himself by His gratuitous bounty to give them excellent repayment!

مَا أَنَا بِأَعْصَى مَنْ عَصَاكَ فَغَفَرْتَ لَهُ،

maaa ana bia'-s'aa man a's'aaka faghafar-ta lah

I am not the most disobedient of those who have disobeyed Thee

وَمَا أَنَا بِأَلْوَمِ مَنِ اعْتَذَرَ إلَيْكَ فَقَبِلْتَ مِنْهُ،

wa maaa ana bil-wami mani aa'-tad'ara ilay-ka faqabil-ta min-h

and whom Thou hast forgiven, nor am I the most blameworthy to offer excuses which Thou hast accepted,

وَمَا أَنَا بِأَظْلَمِ مَنْ تَابَ إلَيْكَ فَعُدْتَ عَلَيْهِ ،

wa maaa ana biz'-lami man taaba ilay-ka fau't-ta a'lay-h

nor am I the most wrongdoing of those who have repented to Thee, and to whom Thou hast returned

أَتُوبُ إلَيْكَ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا تَوْبَةَ نَادِم عَلَى مَا فَرَطَ مِنْهُ

atoobu ilay-ka fee maqaamee had'aa taw-bata naadimin a'laa maa farat'a min-h

I repent to Thee in this my station, the repentance of one remorseful over what preceded from him

مُشْفِق مِمَّا اجْتَمَعَ عَلَيْهِ خَالِصِ الْحَيَاءِ مِمَّا وَقَعَ فِيْهِ ،

mush-fiqim-mim-maj-tamaa' a'lay-h khaalis'il-h'ayaaa-i mim-maa waqaa' feeh

hastily, apprehensive of what has gathered around him, pure in shame for that into which he has fallen,

عَالِم بِأَنَّ الْعَفْوَ عَنِ الذَّنْبِ الْعَظِيمِ لاَ يَتَعـاظَمُكَ،

a'alimin bian-nal-a'f-wa a'nid'-d'ambil-a'z'eemi laa yataa'az'amuk

knowing that pardoning great sins is nothing great for Thee.

وَأَنَّ التَّجَـاوُزَ عَنِ الإثْمِ الْجَلِيْلِ لا يَسْتَصْعِبُكَ ،

wa an-nat-tajaawuza a'nil-ith-mil-jaleeli laa yas-tas'-i'buk

overlooking enormous misdeeds is not difficult for thee

وَأَنَّ احْتِمَالَ الْجنَايَاتِ الْفَـاحِشَةِ لا يَتَكَأَّدُكَ،

wa an-na ah'-timaalal-jinaayaatil-faah'ishati laa yatakaa-aduk

putting up with indecent crimes does not trouble Thee,

وَأَنَّ أَحَبَّ عِبَادِكَ إلَيْكَ مَنْ تَرَكَ الاسْتِكْبَارَ عَلَيْكَ،

wa an-na ah'ab-ba i'baadika ilay-ka man tarakalis-tik-baara a'lay-k

and the most beloved of Thy servants to Thee is he who refrains from arrogance before thee

وَجَانَبَ الإِصْرَارَ، وَلَزِمَ الاسْتِغْفَارَ.

wa jaanabal-is'-raar wa lazimalis-tigh-faar

pulls aside from persistence, and holds fast to praying forgiveness!

وَأَنَا أَبْرَأُ إلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنْ أَسْتَكْبِرَ،

wa ana ab-ra-u ilay-ka min sn ss-tak-bir

I am clear before Thee of arrogance,

وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أصِـرَّ.

wa su'wd'u bika min sn us'ir

I seek refuge in Thee from persistence,

وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا قَصَّرْتُ فِيهِ ،

was-tagh-firuka limaa qas'-s'ar-tu feeh

I pray forgiveness from Thee for shortcomings,

وَأَسْتَعِينُ بِكَ عَلَى مَا عَجَزْتُ عَنْهُ.

wa as-tae'enu bika a'laa maa a'jaz-tu a'n-h

I seek help from Thee in incapacity!

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ

al-laahum-ma s'al-li a'laa muh'am-madiw-wa aaalih

O God bless Muhammad and his Household,

وَهَبْ لِي مَا يَجبُ عَلَيَّ لَكَ ،

wa hab lee maa yajibu a'lay-ya lak

dispense with what is incumbent upon me toward Thee,

وَعَافِنِي مِمَّا أَسْتَوْجِبُهُ مِنْكَ،

wa a'afinee mim-maaa as-taw-jibuhoo mink

release me from what I merit from Thee,

وَأجِرْنِي مِمَّا يَخَافُهُ أَهْلُ الإساءَةِ

wa ajir-nee mim-maa yakhaafuhooo ah-lul-isaaa-ah

and grant me sanctuary from what the evildoers fear!

فَإنَّكَ مَلِيءٌ بِالْعَفْوِ، مَرْجُوٌّ لِلْمَغْفِرَةِ، مَعْرُوفٌ بِالتَّجَاوُزِ ،

fa in-naka malee-um-bil-a'f-w mar-joo-wu lil-magh-firah maa'-roofum-bit-tajaawz

For Thou art full of pardon, the hoped-for source of forgiveness, well known for Thy forbearance.

لَيْسَ لِحَاجَتِي مَطْلَبٌ سِوَاكَ ،

lay-sa lih'aajatee mat'-labun siwaak

My need has no object but Thee,

وَلا لِذَنْبِي غَافِرٌ غَيْرُكَ، َحاشَاكَ

wa laa lid'ambee ghaafirun ghay-ruk h'aashaak

my sin no forgiver other than Thee - could that be possible?

وَلاَ أَخَافُ عَلَى نَفْسِي إلاّ إيَّاكَ

wa laaa akhaafu a'laa naf-seee il-laaa ee-yaak

I have no fear for myself except from Thee;

إنَّكَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوَى وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ .

in-naka ah-lut-taq-waa wa ah-lul-magh-firah

Thou art worthy of reverential fear, and worthy to forgive!

صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِ مُحَمَّد،

s'al-li a'laa muh'am-madiw-waaali muh'am-mad

Bless Muhammad and his Household,

وَاقْض حَاجَتِي وَأَنْجِحْ طَلِبَتِي،

wa aq-z''i h'aajatee wa anjih' t'alibatee

grant my need,answer my request favorably,

وَاغْفِرْ ذَنْبِي، وَآمِنْ خَوْفَ نَفْسِيْ

wagh-fir d'ambee wa aaamin khaw-fa naf-see

forgive my sin and give me security from fear for myself!

إنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْء قَدِيرٌ

in-naka a'laa kul-li shay-in qadeer

Thou art powerful over everything,

وَذلِكَ عَلَيْكَ يَسِيرٌ آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ .

wa d'alika a'lay-ka yaseer aaameena rab-bal-a'alameen

and that is easy for Thee.Amen, Lord of the worlds
