Sahifa Sajjadiya 19: Asking for Water During Drought

وَانْشُرْ عَلَيْنَا رَحْمَتَكَ بِغَيْثِكَ الْمُغْدِقِ

Wa ansyur ‘alaynā raḥmataka bighaythika al-mughdiqi,

And spread over us Your mercy with abundant rain,

مِنَ السَّحَابِ الْمُنْسَاقِ لِنَبَاتِ أَرْضِكَ الْمُونِقِ فِي جَمِيعِ الآفَاقِ،

Mina al-saḥābi al-munsāqi linabāti arḍika al-mūniqi fī jamī‘i al-āfāqi,

From the clouds driven to nourish Your earth in all horizons,

وَامْنُنْ عَلَى عِبَادِكَ بِإينَاعِ الثَّمَرَةِ،

Wa amnun ‘alā ‘ibādika bi-inā‘i al-thamarati,

And bless Your servants with fruitful harvests,

وَأَحْيِ بِلاَدَكَ بِبُلُوغِ الزَّهَرَةِ.

Wa aḥyi bilādaka bibu-lūghi al-zahrah,

And revive Your lands with flourishing blossoms.

وَأَشْهِدْ مَلائِكَتَكَ الْكِرَامَ السَّفَرَةَ

Wa ash-hid malā’ikataka al-kirāma al-sufara,

And call Your noble angels as witnesses,

بِسَقْيٍ مِنْكَ نَافِعٍ دَائِمٍ غُزْرُهُ

Bi-saqyin minka nāfi‘in dā’im ghuzruhu,

With beneficial, continuous rain from You,

واسِعٌ دِرَرُهُ وَابِلٌ سَرِيعٌ عَاجِلٌ

Wāsi‘un diraruhū wābilun sarī‘un ‘ājil,

Its pearls widespread, a fast and swift downpour,

تُحْيِي بِهِ مَا قَدْ مَاتَ، وَتَرُدُّ بِهِ مَا قَدْ فَاتَ،

Tuḥyī bihi mā qad māta, wa tarddu bihi mā qad fāta,

It revives what has died, restores what has passed,

وَتُخْرِجُ بِهِ مَا هُوَ آتٍ،

Wa tukhriju bihi mā huwa ātin,

And brings forth what is coming,

وَتُوَسِّعُ بِهِ فِي الأَقْوَاتِ،

Wa tuwassi‘u bihi fī al-aqwāti,

And increases the sustenance abundantly,

سَحَابًا مُتَرَاكِمًا هَنِيئًا مَرِيئًا طَبَقًا

Saḥāban mutarākiman hanī’an marī’an ṭabaqan,

Clouds piled, pleasing and full, in layers,

مُجَلْجَلًا غَيْرَ مُلِثٍّ وَدِقُّهُ،

Mujaljilan ghayra muliththin wa diqquh,

Thundering, not obscured, its drops,

وَلَا خُلَّابَ بَرْقُهُ.

Wa lā khullāba barquh,

And its lightning is not destructive.

أَللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا مَغِيثًا مَرِيعًا مُمْرِعًا عَرِيْضًا،

Allāhumma usqinā ghaythan maghīthan marī‘an mumri‘an ‘arīḍan,

O Allah, grant us rain that is life-giving, vast, and spreading,

وَاسِعًا غَزِيرًا تَرُدُّ بِهِ النَّهِيضَ وَتَجْبُرُ بِهِ الْمَهِيضَ.

Wāsi‘an ghazīran tarddu bihi al-nahīdha wa tajburu bihi al-mahīdh,

Abundant and copious, restoring floods and replenishing the streams.

أَللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا سَقْيًا تُسِيلُ مِنْهُ الظِّرَابَ،

Allāhumma usqinā saqyan tusīlu minhu al-ẓirāb,

O Allah, let it flow as a river of nourishment,

وَتَمْلَأُ مِنْهُ الْجِبَابَ،

Wa tamla’u minhu al-jibāb,

Filling all reservoirs,

وَتُفَجِّرُ بِهِ الأَنْهَارَ،

Wa tufajjiru bihi al-anhār,

And cause rivers to gush forth,

وَتُنْبِتُ بِهِ الأَشْجَارَ،>

Wa tunbītu bihi al-ashjār,

And grow trees,

وَتُرْخِصُ بِهِ الأَسْعَارَ فِي جَمِيعِ الأَمْصَارِ،

Wa turkhisu bihi al-as‘āra fī jamī‘i al-amṣār,

And make goods affordable in all lands,

وَتَنْعَشُ بِهِ الْبَهَائِمَ وَالْخَلْقَ،

Wa tun‘ishu bihi al-bahā’ima wa al-khalq,

And revive animals and all creatures,

وَتُكْمِلُ لَنَا بِهِ طَيِّبَاتِ الرِّزْقِ،

Wa tukmilu lanā bihi ṭayyibāti al-rizq,

And complete for us the blessings of sustenance,

وَتُنْبِتُ لَنَا بِهِ الزَّرْعَ،

Wa tunbitu lanā bihi al-zar‘a,

And cause our crops to grow,

وَتُدِرُّ بِهِ الضَّرْعَ،

Wa tudirru bihi al-ḍar‘a,

And provide milk from livestock,

وَتَزِيدُنَا بِهِ قُوَّةً إِلَى قُوَّتِنَا.

Wa tazīdunā bihi quwwatan ilā quwwatinā,

And increase our strength.

أَللَّهُمَّ لا تَجْعَلْ ظِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا سَمُومًا

Allāhumma lā taj‘al ẓillahu ‘alaynā sumūman,

O Allah, do not let its shade be harmful to us,

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ بَرْدَهُ عَلَيْنَا حُسُومًا،

Wa lā taj‘al bardahu ‘alaynā ḥusūman,

And do not let its coldness be destructive to us,

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ صَوْبَهُ عَلَيْنَا رُجُومًا،

Wa lā taj‘al ṣawbahu ‘alaynā rujūman,

And do not let its fall strike us,

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ مَاءَهُ عَلَيْنَا أُجَاجًا.

Wa lā taj‘al mā’ahu ‘alaynā ujājā,

And do not let its water become brackish upon us.

أَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِ مُحَمَّد،

Allāhumma ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammad wa āli Muḥammad,

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and his family,

وَارْزُقْنَا مِنْ بَرَكَاتِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ،

Wa urzuqnā min barakāti al-samāwāti wa al-arḍ,

And provide us from the blessings of the heavens and the earth,

إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.

Innaka ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr,

Indeed, You are capable of all things.

أللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَـا الْغَيْثَ،

al-laahumas-qinaal-ghay-th

1.O God, water us with rain,

وَانْشُرْ عَلَيْنَا رَحْمَتَـكَ بِغَيْثِكَ الْمُغْدِقِ

wanshur a'lay-naa rah'-mataka bighay-thikal-mugh-diqi

2.unfold upon us Your mercy through Your copious rain

مِنَ الْسَّحَابِ الْمُنْسَـاقِ لِنَبَاتِ أَرْضِكَ الْمُونِقِ فِي جَمِيـعِ الآفَاقِ،

minas-sah'aabil-munsaaqi linabaati ar-z''ikal-moofiqi fee jameei'l-aaafaaq

3.from the driven clouds, so that Your goodly earth may grow on all horizons!

وَامْنُنْ عَلَى عِبَادِكَ بِإينَاعِ الثَّمَرَةِ،

wam-nun a'laa i'baadika bieenaai'th-thamarah

4.Show kindness to Your servants through the ripening of the fruit,

وأَحْيِ بِلاَدَكَ بِبُلُوغِ الزَّهَرَةِ.

wa ah'-yi bilaadaka bibulooghiz-zah-rah

5.revive Your land through the blossoming of the flowers,

وَأَشْهِدْ مَلائِكَتَكَ الْكِرَامَ السَّفَرَةَ

wa ash-hid malaaa-ikatakal-kiraamas-safarata

6.and let Your angels - the noble scribes - be witness

بِسَقْي مِنْكَ نَافِع دَائِم غُزْرُهُ

bisaq-yim-minka naafia'- daaa-imin ghuz-ruh

7.to a beneficial watering from You, lasting in its abundance,

َواسِعٌ دِرَرُهُ وَابِل سَرِيع عَاجِل

waasii'n diraruh waabilin sareei'n a'ajil

8.plenty in its flow, heavy, quick, soon,

تُحْيِي بِهِ مَا قَدْ مَات، وَتَرُدُّ بهِ مَا قَدْ فَاتَ،

tuh'-yee bihee maa qad maat wa tarud-du bihee maa qad faat

9.through which You revivest what has died, returnest what has vanished,

وَتُخْرِجُ بِهِ مَا هُوَ آت،

wa tukh-riju bihee maa huwa aaat

10.bringest forth what is coming,

وَتُوَسِّعُ بِهِ فِي الأَقْوَاتِ،

wa tuwas-siu' bihee fil-aq-waat

11.and providest plentiful foods,

سَحَاباً مُتَرَاكِماً هَنِيئاً مَرِيئاً طَبَقاً

sah'aabam-mutaraakima hanee am-maree-aa t'abaqam

12.through heaped up, wholesome, productive clouds, in reverberating layers,

مُجَلْجَلاً غَيْرَ مُلِثٍّ وَدْقُهُ،

mujal-jalaa ghay-ra mulith-thiw-wad-quh

13.the rain's downpour not without cease,

وَلاَ خُلَّب بَرْقُهُ.

wa laa khul-labim-bar-quh

14.the lightning's flashes not without fruit!

أللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثاً مَغيثَاً مَرِيعاً مُمْرِعاً عَرِيْضَاً،

al-laahum-ma as-qinaa ghay-tham -mugheethaa mareea'm-mum-ria'a a'reez''aw

15.O God, give us water through rain, helping, productive, fertilizing, widespread,

وَاسِعاً غَزِيراً تَرُدُّ بِهِ النَّهِيضَ وَتَجْبُرُ بِهِ الْمَهِيضَ.

waasia'na ghazeeraa tarud-du bihin-naheez'' wa taj-buru bihil-maheez''

16.plentiful, abundant, bringing back the risen, restoring the broken!

أللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا سَقْياً تُسِيلُ مِنْهُ الظِّرابَ،

al-laahum-ma as-qinaa saq-yana tuseelu min-huz'-z'iraab

17.O God, give us water with a watering through which You wilt make the stone hills pour,

وَتَمْلاءُ مِنْهُ الْجِبَابَ،

wa tam-lau min-hul-jibaab

18.fill the cisterns,

وَتُفَجِّرُ بِهِ الأنْهَارَ،

wa tufaj-jiru bihil-an-haar

19.flood the rivers,

وَتُنْبِتُ بِهِ الأشْجَارَ

wa tumbitu bihil-ash-jaar

20.make the trees grow,

وَتُرْخِصُ بِهِ الأسْعَارَ فِي جَمِيع الأمْصَارِ،

wa tur-khis'u bihil-as-a'ara fee jameei'l-am-s'aar

21.bring down prices in all the lands,

وَتَنْعَشُ بِهِ البَهَائِمَ وَالْخَلْقَ،

wa tun-i'shu bihil-bahaaa-ima wal-khal-q

22.invigorate the beasts and the creatures,

وَتُكْمِلُ لَنَا بِهِ طَيِّبَاتِ الرِّزْقِ،

wa tuk-milu lanaa bihee t'ay-yibaatir-riz-q

23.perfect for us the agreeable things of provision,

وَتُنْبِتُ لَنَا بِهِ الزَّرْعَ،

wa tumbitu lanaa bihiz-zar-a'

24.make grow for us the fields,

وَتُدِرُّ بِهِ الضَّرْعَ،

- wa tudir-ru bihiz''-z''ar-a'-

25.let flow for us the teats,

وَتَزِيدُنَا بِهِ قُوَّةً إلَى قُوَّتِنَا.

wa tazeedunaa bihee qoo-watan ilaa qoo-watinaa

26.and add for us strength to our strength!

أللَّهُمَّ لا تَجْعَلْ ظِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا سَمُوماً

al-laahum-ma laa taj-a'l z'il-lahoo a'lay-naa samoomaa

27.O God, make not the cloud's shadow over us a burning wind,

وَلاَ تَجْعَلْ بَرْدَهُ عَلَيْنَا حُسُوماً،

wa laa taj-a'l bar-dahoo a'lay-naa h'usoomaa

28.allow not its coldness to be cutting,

وَلاَ تَجْعَلْ صَوْبَهُ عَلَيْنَا رُجُوماً،

wa laa taj-a'l s'aw-bahoo a'lay-naa rujoomaa

29.let not its pouring down upon us be a stoning,

وَلا تَجْعَلْ مَاءَهُ عَلَيْنَا أُجَاجـاً.

wa laa taj-a'l maaa-ahoo a'lay-naaa ujaajaa

30.and make not its waters for us bitter!

أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِ مُحَمَّد،

al-laahum-ma s'al-li a'laa muh'am-madiw-waaali muh'am-mad

31.O God, bless Muhammad and his Household

وَارْزُقْنَا مِنْ بَرَكَاتِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأرْضِ،

war-zuq-naa mim-barakaatis-samaawaati wal-ar-z''

32.and provide us with the blessings of the heavens and the earth!

إنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْء قَدِيرٌ .

in-naka a'laa kul-li shay-in qadeer

33."Thou art powerful over everything"! (3:26)
