Sahifa Sajjadiya 26: Prayer for Neighbours and Friends

وَتَـوَلَّنِي فِي جِيرَانِي وَمَوَالِيَّ وَالْعَارِفِينَ بِحَقِّنَا

wa tawallanī fī jīrānī wa mawāliyya wa al-‘ārifīna biḥaqqinā

and attend to me with Your best attending in my neighbours and friends who recognize our right,

وَالْمُنَابِذِينَ لأِعْدَآئِنَا بِأَفْضَلِ وِلاَيَتِكَ،

wa al-munābidhīna li-a‘dā’inā bi-afḍali wilāyatik.

and war against our enemies, with Your best attending!

وَوَفِّقْهُمْ لإِقَامَةِ سُنَّتِكَ

wa waffiqhum li-iqāmati sunnatik

Give them success in performing Your prescriptions

وَالأَخْذِ بِمَحَاسِنِ أَدَبِكَ فِي إرْفَاقِ ضَعِيفِهِمْ،

wa al-akhdhi bi-maḥāsini adabika fī irfāqi ḍa‘īfihim,

and taking on the beauties of Your courtesy through acting gently with their weak,

وَسَدِّ خَلَّتِهِمْ، وَعِيَادَةِ مَرِيضِهِمْ،

wa saddi khallatihim, wa ‘iyādati marīḍihim,

remedying their lacks, and visiting their sick,

وَهِدَايَةِ مُسْتَرْشِدِهِمْ، وَمُنَاصَحَةِ مُسْتَشِيرِهِمْ،

wa hidāyati mustarshidihim, wa munāṣaḥati mustashīrihim,

guiding their seeker of right guidance, and giving good counsel to their seeker of advice,

وَتَعَهُّدِ قَادِمِهِمْ، وَكِتْمَانِ أَسْرَارِهِمْ،

wa ta‘ahhudī qādimihim, wa kitmāni asrārihim,

attending to the one among them who returns from travel, and hiding their secrets,

وَسَتْرِ عَوْرَاتِهِمْ، وَنُصْرَةِ مَظْلُومِهِمْ،

wa satri ‘awrātihim, wa nuṣrati maẓlūmihim,

covering over their shameful things, and helping their wronged,

وَحُسْنِ مُوَاسَاتِهِمْ بِالْمَاعُونِ،

wa ḥusni muwāsātihim bi-al-mā‘ūn,

and sharing kindly with them in goods,

وَالْعَوْدِ عَلَيْهِمْ بِـالْجِـدَةِ وَالإِفْضَـالِ،

wa al-‘awdi ‘alayhim bi-al-jiddati wa al-ifḍāl,

turning toward them with wealth and bestowal of bounty,

وَإعْطَآءِ مَـا يَجِبُ لَهُمْ قَبْلَ السُّؤَالِ

wa i‘ṭā’i mā yajibu lahum qabla as-su’āl

and giving what is due to them before they ask!

وَاجْعَلْنِي اللَّهُمَّ أَجْزِي بِالإحْسَانِ مُسِيْئَهُمْ،

wa ij‘alnī Allāhumma ajzī bi-al-iḥsāni musī’ahum,

Let me, O God, repay their evildoer with good-doing,

وَأَعْرِضُ بِالتَّجَاوُزِ عَنْ ظَالِمِهِمْ،

wa a‘riḍu bi-at-tajāwuzi ‘an ẓālimihim,

turn away from their wrongdoer with forbearance.

وَأَسْتَعْمِلْ حُسْنَ الظَّنِّ فِي كَافَّتِهِمْ،

wa asta‘mil ḥusna aẓ-ẓanni fī kāffatihim,

have a good opinion of every one of them,

وَأَتَوَلَّى بِالْبِرِّ عَامَّتَهُمْ،

wa atawallā bi-al-birri ‘āmmatahum,

attend to all of them with devotion,

وَأَغُضُّ بَصَرِي عَنْهُمْ عِفَّةً،

wa aghuḍḍu baṣarī ‘anhum ‘iffah,

lower my eyes before them in continence,

وَأَلِينُ جَانِبِيْ لَهُمْ تَوَاضُعاً،

wa ulīnu jānibī lahum tawāḍu‘ā,

make mild my side toward them in humility,

وَأَرِقُّ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْبَلاَءِ مِنْهُمْ رَحْمَةً،

wa ariqqu ‘alā ahli al-balā’i minhum raḥmah,

be tender toward the afflicted among them in mercy,

وَأُسِرُّ لَهُمْ بِالْغَيْبِ مَوَدَّةً،

wa usirru lahum bi-al-ghaybi mawaddah,

make them happy in absence through affection,

وَأُحِبُّ بَقَاءَ النِّعْمَةِ عِنْدَهُمْ نُصْحاً،

wa uḥibbu baqā’a an-ni‘mati ‘indahum nuṣḥā,

love that they continue to receive favour through good will,

وَأُوجِبُ لَهُمْ مَا أُوجِبُ لِحَامَّتِي،

wa ūjibu lahum mā ūjibu liḥāmmatī,

grant them what I grant my next of kin,

وَأَرْعَى لَهُمْ مَا أَرْعَى لِخَاصَّتِي.

wa ar‘ā lahum mā ar‘ā li-khāṣṣatī.

and observe for them what I observe for my special friends!

أَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammadin wa ālih,

O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

وَارْزُقْنِي مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ،

wa rzuqnī mithla dhālika minhum,

provide me the like of that from them,

وَاجْعَلْ لِي أَوْفَى الْحُظُوظِ فِيمَا عِنْدَهُمْ ،

wa ij‘al lī awfā al-ḥuẓūẓi fīmā ‘indahum,

appoint for me the fullest share of what is with them,

وَزِدْهُمْ بَصِيْرَةً فِي حَقِّي،

wa zidhum baṣīratan fī ḥaqqī,

increase them in insight toward my right,

وَمَعْرِفَةً بِفَضْلِي،

wa ma‘rifatan bi-faḍlī,

and knowledge of my excellence

حَتَّى يَسْعَدُوا بِي وَأَسْعَدَ بِهِمْ

ḥattā yas‘adū bī wa as‘ada bihim

so that they will be fortunate through me and I fortunate through them!

آللهُمَّ آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.

Āmīn Rabb al-‘ālamīn.

Amen, Lord of the worlds!

أللَّهُمَّ صَـلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِـهِ

al-laahum-ma s'al-li a'laa muh'am-madiw-wa aaalih

1.O God, bless Muhammad and his Household

وَتَـوَلَّنِي فِي جيرَانِي وَمَوَالِيَّ وَالْعَارِفِينَ بحَقِّنَا وَالْمُنَابِذِينَ لأِعْدَائِنَا بِأَفْضَلِ وَلاَيَتِكَ،

wa tawal-lanee fee jeeraanee wa ma waalee-yal-a'arifeena bih'aq-qinaa wal-munaabid'eena liaa'-daaa-inaa bif-z''ali walaayatik

2.and attend to me with Your best attending in my neighbours and friends who recognize our right and war against our enemies!

وَوَفِّقْهُمْ لإقَامَةِ سُنَّتِكَ

wa waf-fiq-hum liiqaamati sun-natik

3.Give [my neighbours and friends] success in performing Your prescriptions

وَالأَخْذِ بِمَحَاسِنِ أَدَبِكَ فِي إرْفَاقِ ضَعِيفِهِمْ،

wal-akh-d'i bimah'aasini adabika feee ir-faaqi z''ae'efhim

4.and taking on the beauties of Your courtesy through acting gently with their weak,

وَسَدِّ خَلَّتِهِمْ، وَعِيَادَةِ مَرِيضِهِمْ،

wa sad-di khal-latihim- wa e'eaadati mareez''ihim

5.remedying their lacks, visiting their sick,

وَهِدَايَةِ مُسْتَرْشِدِهِمْ، وَمُنَاصَحَةِ مُسْتَشِيرِهِمْ،

wa hidaayati mus-tar-shidihim- wa munaas'ah'ati mus-tasheerihim

6.guiding their seeker of right guidance, giving good counsel to their seeker of advice,

وَتَعَهُّدِ قَادِمِهِمْ، وَكِتْمَانِ أَسْرَارِهِمْ،

wa taa'h-hudi qaadimihim- wa kit-maani as-raarihim

7.attending to the one among them who returns from travel, hiding their secrets,

وَسَتْرِ عَوْرَاتِهِمْ، وَنُصْرَةِ مَظْلُومِهِمْ،

wa sat-ri a'w-raatihim- wa nus'-rati maz'-loomihim

8.covering over their shameful things, helping their wronged,

وَحُسْنِ مُوَاسَاتِهِمْ بِالْمَاعُونِ،

wa h'us-ni muwaasaatihim bil-maau'wn

9.sharing kindly with them in goods,

وَالْعَوْدِ عَلَيْهِمْ بِـالْجِـدَةِ وَالإِفْضَـالِ،

wal-a'w-di a'lay-him bil-jidati wal-if-z''aal

10.turning toward them with wealth and bestowal of bounty,

وَإعْطَآءِ مَـا يَجِبُ لَهُمْ قَبْلَ السُّؤالِ

wa ia'-t'aaa-i maa yajibu lahum qab-las-soo-aal

11.and giving what is due to them before they ask!

واجْعَلْنِي اللَّهُمَّ أَجْزِي بِالإحْسَانِ مُسِيْئَهُمْ،

w aj-a'l-nee al-laahum aj-zee bil-ih'-saani musee-ahum

12.Let me, O God, repay their evildoer with good-doing,

وَاعْرِضُ بِالتَّجَاوُزِ عَنْ ظَالِمِهِمْ،

wa ua'-riz''u bit-tajaawzi a'n z'aalimihim

13.turn away from their wrongdoer with forbearance.

وَأَسْتَعْمِلْ حُسْنَ الظّنِّ فِي كَافَّتِهِمْ، وَأَتَوَلَّى بِالْبِرِّ عَامَّتَهُمْ،

wa as-taa'-milu h'us-naz'-z'an-ni fee kaaaf-fatihim- wa atawal-laa bil-bir-ri a'aam-matahum

14.have a good opinion of every one of them, attend to all of them with devotion,

وَأَغُضُّ بَصَرِي عَنْهُمْ عِفَّةً،

wa aghuz''-z''u bas'aree a'n-hum i'f-fah

15.lower my eyes before them in continence,

وَألِينُ جَانِبِيْ لَهُمْ تَوَاضُعاً،

wa uleena jaanibee lahum tawaaz''ua'a

16.make mild my side toward them in humility,

وَأَرِقُّ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْبَلاءِ مِنْهُمْ رَحْمَةً،

wa ariq-qu a'laaa ah-lil-balaaa-i min-hum rah'-mah

17.be tender toward the afflicted among them in mercy,

وَأسِرُّ لَهُمْ بِالْغَيْبِ مَوَدَّةً،

wa usir-ru lahum bil-ghay-bi mawad-dah

18.make them happy in absence through affection,

وَأُحِبُّ بَقَاءَ النِّعْمَةِ عِنْدَهُمْ نُصْحاً،

wa uh'ib-bu baqaaa-an-nia'-mati i'ndahum nus'-h'aa

19.love that they continue to receive favour through good will,

وَاُوجِبُ لَهُمْ مَا اُوجِبُ لِحَامَّتِي،

wa oojibu lahum maaa oojibu lih'aaam-matee

20.grant them what I grant my next of kin,

وَأَرْعَى لَهُمْ مَا أَرْعَى لِخَاصَّتِي.

wa sr-a'a lahum maaa ar-a'a likhaaas'-s'atee

21.and observe for them what I observe for my special friends!

أَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمِّد وَآلِهِ ،

al-laahum-ma s'al-li a'laa muh'am-madiw-wa aaalih

22.O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

وَارْزُقْنِي مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ،

war-zuq-nee mith-la d'alika min-hum-

23.provide me the like of that from them,

وَاجْعَلْ لِي أَوْفَى الْحُظُوظِ فِيمَا عِنْدَهُمْ ،

waj-a'l-leee aw-fal-h'uz'ooz'i feemaa i'ndahum-

24.appoint for me the fullest share of what is with them,

وَزِدْهُمْ بَصِيْرَةً فِي حَقِّي، وَمَعْرِفَةً بِفَضْلِي،

wa zid-hum bas'eeratan fee h'aq-qee wa maa'-rifatam-bifaz''-lee

25.increase them in insight toward my right and knowledge of my excellence

حَتَّى يَسْعَدُوا بِي وَأَسْعَدَ بِهِمْ

h'at-taa yas-a'doo bee wa as-a'da bihim-

26.so that they will be fortunate through me and I fortunate through them!

آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.

aaameena rab-bal-a'alameen

27.Amen, Lord of the worlds!
