- (1) It is recommended to say this supplicatory amulet, which the Holy Prophet (s) taught to Imam `Ali (`a) against fever:
- (2) A feverish person is recommended to say repeatedly in mornings and evenings the supplicatory prayer known as du`a' al-nur—a supplicatory prayer that Lady Fatimah al-Zahra' (`a) taught to Salman. This supplicatory prayer can be found in Mafatih al-Jinan. — (3) The Holy Imams (`a) are reported to have used to treated themselves against fever with cold water. Successively, they used to wet their clothes by putting one on and leaving the other in water. When the dressed one dried out, they would put on the other wet one. — (4) Handwritten by Imam al-Rida (`a), a feverish person may write the following inscriptions on three sheets of paper as follows: — On the first sheet, the following may be written down:

- On each of these sheets, Surah al-Tawhid may be recited three times. After that, the feverish person may swallow the sheets in three days; each one on a day. If this is practiced, the fever will be healed, Allah willing. — (5) The feverish person my untie the buttons of his shirt, hang his head down to his chest, say the adhan and the iqamah statements, and recite Surah al-Fatihah seven times. If this is practiced, the fever will be healed, Allah willing. — (6) The Holy Imams (`a) are reported to have instructed that the following supplicatory prayer should be written on a parchment and put on to the feverish person:
- Then, it is recommended to write down the name of a non-Muslim or an enemy of Almighty Allah. — (7) On the right arm of the feverish person, it is advised to hang a sheet of paper (or the like) on which the following inscription has been written down:
- (8) On three pieces of sugar, the following three phrases may be written down and the feverish person may eat them in the mornings of three days as the first meal, each piece a day: — The inscription on the first piece of sugar is this:

- Twenty-eighth:against Tenesmus — It is reported that a man complained to Imam Musa al-Kazim (`a) about suffering from continuous tenesmus (i.e. a frequent, excessive, and painful desire to defecate). As treatment, the Imam (`a) taught the man to say the following supplicatory prayer after the Night Prayer:

(1) It is recommended to say this supplicatory amulet, which the Holy Prophet (s) taught to Imam `Ali (`a) against fever:
1اللَّهُمَّ ٱرْحَمْ جِلْدِيَ ٱلرَّقِيقَ
O Allah, (please) have mercy upon my soft skin

وَعَظْمِيَ ٱلدَّقِيقَ
and my fragile bone.

وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فَوْرَةِ ٱلْحَرِيقِ
I pray Your protection against the outburst of fire.

يَا أُمَّ مِلْدَمٍ
O Ummu-Mildam (i.e. fever),
- 5
إِنْ كُنْتِ آمَنْتِ بِٱللَّهِ
if you believe in Allah,
- 6
فَلاَ تَأْكُلِي ٱللَّحْمَ
then do not eat the flesh,
- 7
وَلاَ تَشْرَبِي ٱلدَّمَ
do not drink the blood,
- 8
وَلاَ تَفُورِي مِنَ ٱلْفَمِ
do not boil in the mouth,
- 9
وَٱنْتَقِلِي إِلىٰ مَنْ يَزْعَمُ أَنَّ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلٰهاً آخَرَ
and move to one who claims that there is another god with Allah,
- 10
فَإِنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ ٱللَّهُ
for I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,
- 11
وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ
One and Only and having no associate,
- 12
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.

لاَ تَخَفْ نَجَوْتَ مِنْ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ
“Fear not! You are secure from the unjust people.”

On the third sheet, the following may be written down:
17بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

أَلاَ لَهُ ٱلْخَلْقُ وَٱلأَمْرُ
“Surely, His is the creation and the command.
- 19
تَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ
Blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.”

وَمَا أَحَاطَ بِهِ عِلْمُكَ
and whatever is comprehended by Your knowledge

أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
to bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,
- 24
وَأَنْ لاَ تُسَلِّطَ عَلَىٰ… شَيْئاً مِمَّا خَلَقْتَ بِسُوءٍ
not to overload over [so-and-so] the son of [so-and-so] any thing evil that You have created,
- 25
وَٱرْحَمْ جِلْدَهُ ٱلرَّقِيقَ
and to have mercy upon his soft skin
- 26
وَعَظْمَهُ ٱلدَّقِيقَ
and his fragile bone
- 27
مِنْ فَوْرَةِ ٱلْحَرِيقِ
against the outbursts of fire.
- 28
أُخْرُجِي يَا أُمَّ مِلْدَمٍ
Come out, O Ummu-Mildam (i.e. fever),
- 29
يَا آكِلَةَ ٱللَّحْمِ
eater of flesh,
- 30
وَشَارِبَةَ ٱلدَّمِ
and drinker of blood.
- 31
حَرُّهَا وَبَرْدُهَا مِنْ جَهَنَّمَ
Its heat and coldness are from Hell.
- 32
إِنْ كُنْتِ آمَنْتِ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلأَعْظَمِ
If you have believed in Allah the Greatest,
- 33
أَنْ لاَ تَأْكُلِي لِـ… لَحْماً
then do not eat any thing of the flesh of [so-and-so] the son of [so-and-so],
- 34
وَلاَ تَمُصِّي لَهُ دَماً
do not suck any amount of his blood,
- 35
وَلاَ تُنْهِكِي لَهُ عَظْماً
do not weaken any part of his bones,
- 36
وَلاَ تُثَوِّرِي عَلَيْهِ غَمّاً
do not stir up distress over him,
- 37
وَلاَ تُهَيِّجِي عَلَيْهِ صُدَاعاً
do not excite headache over him,
- 38
وَٱنْتَقِلِي عَنْ شَعْرِهِ وَبَشَرِهِ
and move away from his hair, skin,
- 39
وَلَحْمِهِ وَدَمِهِ
flesh, and blood
- 40
إِلىٰ مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلٰهاً آخَرَ
to one who claims that there is another god with Allah
- 41
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ
save Whom there is no god.
- 42
سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
Glory be to Him and Exalted be Him against whatever they associate with Him.

Then, it is recommended to write down the name of a non-Muslim or an enemy of Almighty Allah. — (7) On the right arm of the feverish person, it is advised to hang a sheet of paper (or the like) on which the following inscription has been written down:
43بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
“In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

الْحَمْدُ للَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.
- 45
ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
The Beneficent, the Merciful.
- 46
مَالِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
Master of the Day of Judgment.
- 47
إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
Thee do we serve and Thee do we beseech for help.
- 48
إِهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَاطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
Keep us on the right path—
- 49
صِرَاطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ
the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favors.
- 50
غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ
Not (the path) of those upon whom Your wrath is brought down,
- 51
وَلا ٱلضَّالِّينَ
nor of those who go astray.”
- 52
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ
In the Name of Allah (I begin) and in Allah (I trust).
- 53
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلتَّامَّاتِ كُلِّهَا
I pray the protection of all the perfect words of Allah,
- 54
ٱلَّتِي لاَ يُجَاوِزُهُنَّ بَرٌّ وَلاَ فَاجِرٌ
beyond which neither a pious nor an impious can go,
- 55
مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ وَذَرَأَ وَبَرَأَ
against the evil of whatsoever He has created, fashioned, and made,
- 56
وَمِنْ شَرِّ ٱلْهَامَّةِ وَٱلسَّامَّةِ
against the evil of the pestles, the poisonous,
- 57
وَٱلْعَامَّةِ وَٱللاَّمَّةِ
the general (evils), and the ill sights,
- 58
وَمِنْ شَرِّ طَوَارِقِ ٱللَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ
against the evil of the comers at nights and in days,
- 59
وَمِنْ شَرِّ فُسَّاقِ ٱلْعَرَبِ وَٱلْعَجَمِ
against the evil of the wicked Arabs and non-Arabs,
- 60
وَمِنْ شَرِّ فَسَقَةِ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلإِنْسِ
against the evil of the wicked jinn and men,
- 61
وَمِنْ شَرِّ ٱلشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ
against the evil of Satan and his snares,
- 62
وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ ذِي شَرٍّ
against the evil of all evil things,
- 63
وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ هُوَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا
and against the evil of every living creature that He holds it by its forelock.
- 64
إِنَّ رَبِّي عَلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ
Surely, my Lord is on the right path.
- 65
رَبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا
“Our Lord, on You do we rely,
- 66
وَإِلَيْكَ أَنَبْنَا
to You do we turn,
- 67
وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ
and to You is the eventual coming.”
- 68
يَا نَارُ كُونِي بَرْداً وَسَلاَماً عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
“O fire, be a comfort and peace to Abraham.
- 69
وَأَرَادُوٱ بِهِ كَيْداً فَجَعَلْنَاهُمُ ٱلأَخْسَرِينَ
They desired a war on him, but We made them the greatest losers.”
- 70
بَرْداً وَسَلاَماً عَلَىٰ … بْنِ…
Let it be comfort and peace to [so-and-so] the son of [so-and-so (his mother’s name)].
- 71
رَبَّنَا لاَ تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا
“Our Lord, do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake.
- 72
رَبَّنَا وَلاَ تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا
Our Lord, do not lay on us a burden
- 73
كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا
as You did lay on those before us.
- 74
رَبَّنَا وَلاَ تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لاَ طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ
Our Lord, do not impose upon us that which we have not the strength to bear.
- 75
وَٱعْفُ عَنَّا وَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَا
Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us.
- 76
أَنْتَ مَوْلاَنَا
You are our Patron;
- 77
فَٱنصُرْنَا عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَافِرِينَ
so, help us against the unbelieving people.”
- 78
حَسبِيَ ٱللَّهُ
“Sufficient to me is Allah.
- 79
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ
There is no god save Him.
- 80
فَٱتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلاًَ
So, take Him for a protector.”
- 81
وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَىٰ ٱلْحَيِّ ٱلَّذِي لاَ يَمُوتُ
“Rely on the Ever-living Who dies not
- 82
وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِهِ
and celebrate His praise.
- 83
وَكَفىٰ بِهِ بِذُنُوبِ عِبَادِهِ خَبِيراً بَصِيراً
And Sufficient is He as being aware of the faults of His servants.”
- 84
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ ٱللَّهُ
There is no god but Allah,
- 85
وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ
One and Only and having no associate.
- 86
صَدَقَ وَعْدَهُ
He has truly fulfilled His promise,
- 87
وَنَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ
given victory to His servant,
- 88
وَهَزَمَ ٱلأَحْزَابَ وَحْدَهُ
and defeated the allies alone.
- 89
مَا شَاءَ ٱللَّهُ
Only what Allah wills shall come to pass.
- 90
لاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِٱللَّهِ
“There is no power save with Allah.”
- 91
كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ َلأَغْلِبَنَّ أَنَا وَرُسُلِي
“Allah has written down: I will most certainly prevail, I and My messengers.
- 92
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ
Surely, Allah is Strong, Mighty.”
- 93
إِنَّ حِزْبَ ٱللَّهِ هُمُ ٱلْغَالِبُونَ
“Surely, the party of Allah are they that shall be triumphant.”
- 94
وَمَنْ يَعْتَصِمْ بِٱللَّهِ
“And whoever holds fast to Allah,
- 95
فَقَدْ هُدِيَ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ
he indeed is guided to the right path.”
- 96
وَصَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ
May Allah bless Muhammad
- 97
وَآلِهِ ٱلطَّيِّبِينَ ٱلطَّاهِرِينَ
and his pure and immaculate Household.

(8) On three pieces of sugar, the following three phrases may be written down and the feverish person may eat them in the mornings of three days as the first meal, each piece a day: — The inscription on the first piece of sugar is this:
98عَقَدْتُ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ
I will be tied up by the permission of Allah.

The inscription on the second piece of sugar is this:
99نَدَدْتُ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ
I have fled by the permission of Allah.

The inscription on the third piece of sugar is this:
100سَكَنْتُ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ
I will be calmed down by the permission of Allah.

Twenty-eighth:against Tenesmus — It is reported that a man complained to Imam Musa al-Kazim (`a) about suffering from continuous tenesmus (i.e. a frequent, excessive, and painful desire to defecate). As treatment, the Imam (`a) taught the man to say the following supplicatory prayer after the Night Prayer:
101اللَّهُمَّ مَا كَانَ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَمِنْكَ
O Allah, whatsoever good thing I have ever experienced has been from You
- 102
لاَ حَمْدَ لِي فِيهِ
and I have no praiseworthy thing about it.

وَمَا عَمِلْتُ مِنْ سُوءٍ فَقَدْ حَذَّرْتَنِيهِ
As for whatsoever evil I have done, You have already warned me against it;
- 104
لاَ عُذْرَ لِي فِيهِ
therefore, I am not excused in doing it at all.
- 105
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَتَّكِلَ عَلَىٰ مَا لاَ حَمْدَ لِي فِيهِ
O Allah, I thus pray Your protection against that I rely upon things that I have nopraiseworthy interference it them
- 106
أَوْ آمَنَ مِمَّا لاَ عُذْرَ لِي فِيهِ
or that I feel secure against things that I am unexcused in committing them.
