Sahifa Sajjadiya 2: Blessings upon the Prophet

دُونَ ٱلْاُمَمِ ٱلْمَاضِيَةِ وَٱلْقُـرُونِ السَّالِفَةِ،

dūna al-umam al-māḍiyati wa-al-qurūni al-sālifah,

unlike the nations of the past and the generations that have gone before.

بِقُدْرَتِهِ الَّتِي لَا تَعْجِزُ عَنْ شَيْ‏ءٍ وَ إِنْ عَظُمَ،

bi-qudratihi allatī lā ta‘jizu ‘an shay’in wa in ‘aẓuma,

By His power, which nothing, however great, can render helpless,

وَ لا يَفُوتُهَا شَيءٌ وَإنْ لَطُفَ،

wa lā yafūtuhā shay’un wa in laṭuf,

and from which nothing, however subtle, can escape.

فَخَتَمَ بِنَاعَلَى جَمِيع مَنْ ذَرَأَ،

fakhatama binā ‘alā jamī‘i man dhara’,

Thus, He concluded all of creation with us,

وَ جَعَلَنَا شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى مَنْ جَحَدَ،

wa ja‘alanā shuhadā’a ‘alā man jaḥad,

and made us witnesses against those who denied,

وَكَثَّرَنا بِمَنِّهِ عَلَى مَنْ قَلَّ.

wa kaththaranā bi-mannihi ‘alā man qall.

and, by His grace, multiplied us over those who were few.

اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ أَمِينِكَ عَلَى وَحْيِكَ،

Allāhumma faṣalli ‘alā Muḥammadin amīnika ‘alā waḥyika,

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad, Your trustee of Your revelation,

وَنَجِيبِكَ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ،

wa najībika min khalqika,

Your chosen one from Your creation,

وَ صَفِيِّكَ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ،

wa ṣafīyika min ‘ibādika,

and Your pure one from Your servants,

إمَامِ الرَّحْمَةِ وَقَائِدِ الْخَيْرِ،

imāmi ar-raḥmati wa qā’idi al-khayri,

the leader of mercy and the guide to goodness,

وَ مِفْتَاحِ الْبَرَكَةِ،

wa miftāḥi al-barakah,

and the key to blessings.

كَمَا نَصَبَ لِأَمْرِكَ نَفْسَهُ،

kamā naṣaba li-amrika nafsahu,

Just as he dedicated himself to Your command,

وَ عَرَّضَ فِيْكَ لِلْمَكْرُوهِ بَدَنَهُ،

wa ‘arraḍa fīka lil-makrūhi badanahu,

and exposed his body to harm for Your sake,

وَكَاشَفَ فِي الدُّعَآءِ إلَيْكَ حَامَّتَهُ،

wa kāshafa fī ad-du‘ā’i ilayka ḥāmmatahu,

and faced his close kin openly in calling to You,

وَحَارَبَ فِي رِضَاكَ أسْرَتَهُ،

wa ḥāraba fī riḍāka usratahu,

and fought his own family for Your pleasure,

وَقَطَعَ فِىْ إحْياءِ دِينِكَ رَحِمَهُ،

wa qaṭa‘a fī iḥyā’i dīnika raḥimahu,

and severed his ties for the revival of Your religion,

وَ أَقْصَى الْأَدْنَيْنَ عَلَى جُحُودِهِمْ،

wa aqṣā al-adnayn ‘alā juḥūdi him,

and distanced those closest to him for their denial,

وَ قَرَّبَ الْأَقْصَيْنَ عَلَى اسْتِجَابَتِهِمْ لَكَ،

wa qarraba al-aqṣayn ‘alā istijābatihim laka,

and drew near those most distant for their response to You,

وَ وَالَى فِيكَ الْأَبْعَدِينَ،

wa wālā fīka al-ab‘adīn,

and befriended the furthest for Your sake,

وَ عَادَى فِيكَ الْأَقْرَبِينَ.

wa ‘ādā fīka al-aqrabīn.

and antagonized the closest for Your sake.

وَ أَدْأَبَ نَفْسَهُ فِي تَبْلِيغِ رِسَالَتِكَ،

wa ad’aba nafsahu fī tablīghi risālatika,

And he tirelessly exerted himself in conveying Your message,

وَأَتْعَبَهَا بِالدُّعآءِ إِلٰى مِلَّتِكَ،

wa at‘abahā bi-ad-du‘ā’i ilā millatika,

and wearied himself with calling to Your faith,

وَ شَغَلَهَا بِالنُّصْحِ لِأَهْلِ دَعْوَتِكَ،

wa shaghala ha bi-an-nuṣḥi li-ahli da‘watika,

and occupied himself with advising the people of Your call.

وَهَاجَرَ إِلٰى بِلاَدِ الْغُرْبَةِ،

wa hājara ilā bilādi al-ghurbah,

He migrated to a foreign land,

وَمَحَلِّ النَّأْيِ عَنْ مَوْطِنِ رَحْلِهِ،

wa maḥalli an-na’yi ‘an mawṭini raḥlihi,

a place far from his homeland,

وَمَوْضِـعِ رِجْلِهِ وَ مَسْقَطِ رَأْسِهِ،

wa mawḍi‘i rijlihi wa masqaṭi ra’sihi,

and the walkway of his steps, his birthplace and of his forefathers,

وَمَأْنَسِ نَفْسِهِ،

wa ma’nasi nafsihi,

and the comfort of his soul,

إِرَادَةً مِنْهُ لِإِعْزَازِ دِينِكَ،

irādatan minhu li-i‘zāzi dīnika,

with the intention of giving Your religion glory,

واسْتِنْصَاراً عَلَى أَهْلِ الْكُفْرِ بِكَ،

wa istinṣāran ‘alā ahli al-kufri bika,

and seeking Your help against the people of disbelief in You.

حَتَّى ٱسْتَتَبَّ لَهُ مَا حَاوَلَ فِي أَعْدَائِكَ،

ḥattā istatabba lahu mā ḥāwala fī a‘dā’ika,

Until what he strove for against Your enemies was established for him,

وَاسْتَتَمَّ لَهُ مَا دَبَّرَ فِي أَوْلِيآئِكَ،

wa istatamma lahu mā dabbara fī awliyā’ika,

and what he planned for Your friends(awliya) was completed for him.

فَنَهَدَ إلَيْهِمْ مُسْتَفْتِحاً بِعَوْنِكَ،

fanahada ilayhim mustaftiḥan bi-‘awnika,

So he rose against them, seeking victory with Your help,

وَمُتَقَوِّياً عَلَى ضَعْفِهِ بِنَصْرِكَ،

wa mutaqawwiyan ‘alā ḍa‘fihi bi-naṣrika,

and strengthening himself against his weakness with Your victory.

فَغَزَاهُمْ فِي عُقْرِ دِيَارِهِمْ،

fa-ghazāhum fī ‘uqri diyārihim,

He raided them in the heart of their homes,

وَهَجَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ فِي بُحْبُوحَةِ قَرَارِهِمْ،

wa hajama ‘alayhim fī buḥbūḥati qarārihim,

and attacked them in the midst of their settled places,

حَتَّى ظَهَرَ أَمْرُكَ وَعَلَتْ كَلِمَتُكَ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ.

ḥattā ẓahara amruka wa ‘alat kalimatuka wa law kariha al-mushrikūn.

until Your command became manifest and Your word was exalted, even though the polytheists disliked it.

اَللَّهُمَّ فَارْفَعْهُ بِمَا كَدَحَ فِيكَ إِلٰى الدَّرَجَةِ الْعُلْيَا مِنْ جَنَّتِكَ،

Allāhumma farfa‘hu bimā kadaḥa fīka ilā ad-darajati al-‘ulyā min jannatika,

O Allah, for his striving in Your cause, raise him to the highest rank in Your Paradise,

حَتَّى لاَ يُسَاوَى فِي مَنْزِلَةٍ،

ḥattā lā yusāwā fī manzilah,

so that he is not equaled in station,

وَلا يُكَاْفَأَ فِي مَرْتَبَةٍ،

wa lā yukāfa’a fī martabah,

and not matched in rank,

وَلَا يُوَازِيَهُ لَدَيْكَ مَلَكٌ مُقَرَّبٌ وَلَا نَبِيٌّ مُرْسَلٌ.

wa lā yuwāziyahu ladayka malakun muqarrabun wa lā nabīyun mursal.

and no close angel or sent prophet can be his equal in Your presence.

وَعَرِّفْهُ فِي أَهْلِهِ الطَّاهِرِينَ وَاُمَّتِهِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ حُسْنِ الشَّفَاعَةِ،

Wa ‘arrifhu fī ahlihi aṭ-ṭāhirīna wa ummatihi al-mu’minīna min ḥusni ash-shafā‘ah,

And grant him, in the presence of his purified family and his believing nation, the best of intercession,

أَجَلَّ مَا وَعَدْتَهُ،

ajalla mā wa‘adtahu,

the most magnificent of what You have promised him.

يَا نَافِذَ الْعِدَةِ،

yā nāfidha al-‘idah,

O You who fulfill promises,

يَا وَافِىَ الْقَوْلِ،

yā wāfiya al-qawl,

O You who are true to Your word,

يَا مُبَدِّلَ السَّيِّئَاتِ بِأَضْعَافِهَا مِنَ الْحَسَنَاتِ،

yā mubaddila as-sayyi’āti bi-aḍ‘āfihā mina al-ḥasanāt,

O You who exchange bad deeds for many times their like in good deeds.

إنَّكَ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ الْجَوَادُ اَلْكَرِيمُ.

innaka dhū al-faḍli al-‘aẓīmi al-jawādu al-karīm.

Truly, You are the Possessor of immense favor, the Generous, the Bountiful.

وَالْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي مَنَّ عَلَيْنَا

wal-h'am-du lil-laahil-lad'ee man-na a'lay-naa

1. Praise belongs to God who was kind to us

بِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيِّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ

bimuh'am-madin-nabee-yihee s'al-laal-laahoo a'layhee wa aaalihee

2. through Muhammad, His Prophet (God bless him and his Household)

دُونَ ٱلْاُمَمِ ٱلْمَاضِيَةِ وَٱلْقُـرُونِ السَّالِفَةِ

doonal-umamil-maaz''eeati wal-quroonis-saalifah

3. to the exclusion of past communities and bygone generations,

بِقُدْرَتِهِ الَّتِي لَا تَعْجِزُ عَنْ شَيْ‏ءٍ وَ إِنْ عَظُمَ

biqud-ratihil-latee laa taa'-jizu a'n shay-iw-wa in a'z'um

4. displaying thereby His power, which nothing can render incapable though it be great,

وَ لا يَفُوتُهَا شَيءٌ وَإنْ لَطُفَ،

wa laa yafootuhaa shay-oo-wa il-lat'uf

5. and nothing can escape though it be subtle.

فَخَتَمَ بِنَاعَلَى جَمِيع مَنْ ذَرَأَ

fakhatama binaa a'laa jameei' man d'araa

6. He sealed through us all He created,

وَ جَعَلَنَا شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى مَنْ جَحَدَ

wa jaa'lanaa shuhadaaa-a a'laa man jah'ad

7. appointed us witnesses over those who deny,

وَكَثَّرَنا بِمَنِّهِ عَلَى مَنْ قَلَّ

wa kath-tharanaa biman-nihee a'laa man qal

8. and increased us by His kindness over those who are few.

اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ أَمِينِكَ عَلَى وَحْيِكَ

al-laahum-ma fas'al-li a'laa muh'am-mad ameenika a'laa wah'-yik

9. O God, bless Muhammad, entrusted by You with Your revelation,

وَنَجِيبِكَ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ

wa najeebika min khal-qik

10. distinguished by You among Your creatures,

وَ صَفِيِّكَ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ

wa s'afee-yika min i'baadik

11. devoted to You among Your servants,

إمَامِ الرَّحْمَةِ وَقَائِدِ الْخَيْرِ

wa imaamir-rah'-mah wa qaaa-idil-khay-r

12. the imam of mercy, the leader of good,

وَ مِفْتَاحِ الْبَرَكَةِ

wa mif-taah'il-barakah

13. the key to blessing,

كَمَا نَصَبَ لِأَمْرِكَ نَفْسَهُ

kamaa nas'aba liam-rika naf-sah

14. who wearied his soul for Your affairs,

وَ عَرَّضَ فِيْكَ لِلْمَكْرُوهِ بَدَنَهُ

wa a'r-raz''a feeka lil-mak-roohee badanah

15. exposed his body to detested things for Your sake,

وَكَاشَفَ فِي الدُّعَآءِ إلَيْكَ حَامَّتَهُ

wa kaashafa fid-dua'aa-i ilay-ka h'aaam-matah

16. showed open enmity toward his next of kin by summoning to You,

وَحَارَبَ فِي رِضَاكَ أسْرَتَهُ

wa h'aaraba fee riz''aaka us-ratah

17. fought against his family for Your good pleasure,

وَقَطَعَ فِىْ إحْياءِ دِينِكَ رَحِمَهُ

wa qat'aa' feee ih'-yaaa-i deenika rah'imah

18. cut the ties of the womb in giving life to Your religion,

وَ أَقْصَى الْأَدْنَيْنَ عَلَى جُحُودِهِمْ

wa aq-s'aal-ad-nay-na a'laa juh'oodihim-

19. sent far those close because of their denial,

وَ قَرَّبَ الْأَقْصَيْنَ عَلَى اسْتِجَابَتِهِمْ لَكَ

wa qr-rabal-aq-s'ay-na a'laa as-tijaabatihim lak

20. brought near those far because of their response to You,

وَ وَالَى فِيكَ الْأَبْعَدِينَ

wa waalaa feekal-ab-a'deen

21. showed friendship to the most distant for Your sake,

وَ عَادَى فِيكَ الْأَقْرَبِينَ

wa a'adaa feekal-aq-rabeen

22. displayed enmity toward the nearest for Your sake,

و أَدْأَبَ نَفْسَهُ فِي تَبْلِيغِ رِسَالَتِكَ

wa ad-aba naf-sahoo fee tab-leeghi risaalatik

23. made his soul persevere in delivering Your message,

وَأَتْعَبَهَا بِالدُّعآءِ إِلٰى مِلَّتِكَ

wa at-a'bahaa bid-dua'aa-i ilaa mil-latik

24. tired it in summoning to Your creed,

وَ شَغَلَهَا بِالنُّصْحِ لِأَهْلِ دَعْوَتِكَ

wa shaghalahaa bin-nus'-hee liah-li daa'-watik

25. busied it in counselling those worthy of Your summons,

وَهَاجَرَ إِلٰى بِلاَدِ الْغُرْبَةِ

wa haajara ilaa bilaadil-ghur-bati

26. migrated to the land of exile

وَمَحَلِّ النَّأْيِ عَنْ مَوْطِنِ رَحْلِهِ

wa mah'al-lin-naa-yi a'm-maw-t'ini rah'-lih

27. and the place of remoteness from the home of his saddlebags,

وَمَوْضِـعِ رِجْلِهِ وَ مَسْقَطِ رَأْسِهِ

wa mawz''ii' rij-lih wa mas-qat'i raa-sih

28. the walkway of his feet, the ground of his birth,

وَمَأْنَسِ نَفْسِهِ إِرَادَةً مِنْهُ لِإِعْزَازِ دِينِكَ

wa maa-nasi naf-sihee iraadatam-min-hoo liia'-zaazi deenik

29. and the intimate abode of his soul, desiring to exalt Your religion

واسْتِنْصَاراً عَلَى أَهْلِ الْكُفْرِ بِكَ

was-tins'aaran a'laaa ah-lil-kuf-ri bik

30. and seeking help against those who disbelieved in You,

حَتَّى ٱسْتَتَبَّ لَهُ مَا حَاوَلَ فِي أَعْدَائِكَ

h'at-taa as-tatab-ba lahoo maa h'aawala feee aa'-daaa-ik

31. until what he attempted against Your enemies went well with him

وَاسْتَتَمَّ لَهُ مَا دَبَّرَ فِي أَوْلِيآئِكَ

was-tatam-ma lahoo maa dab-bara feee aw-leeaaa-ik

32. and what he arranged for Your friends was accomplished.

فَنَهَدَ إلَيْهِمْ مُسْتَفْتِحاً بِعَوْنِكَ

fanahada ilay-him-mus-taf-tih'am-bia'w-nik

33. He rose up against them seeking victory through Thine aid,

وَمُتَقَوِّياً عَلَى ضَعْفِهِ بِنَصْرِكَ

wa mutaqaw-wiyan a'laa z''aa'-fihee binas'-rik

34. becoming strong in spite of his weakness with Your help.

فَغَزَاهُمْ فِي عُقْرِ دِيَارِهِمْ

faghazaahum fee u'q-ri deeaarihim

35. He fought against them in the centre of their cities

وَهَجَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ فِي بُحْبُوحَةِ قَرَارِهِمْ

wa hajama a'lay-him fee buh'-booh'ati qaraarihim

36. and attacked them in the midst of their dwellings,

حَتَّى ظَهَرَ أَمْرُكَ

h'at-taa z'hara am-ruka

37. until Your command prevailed,

وَعَلَتْ كَلِمَتُكَ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ

wa a'lat kalimatuka wa law karihal-mush-rikoon

38. and Your word rose up, though the idolaters were averse.

اَللَّهُمَّ فَارْفَعْهُ بِمَا كَدَحَ فِيكَ

al-laahum-ma far-faa'-hoo bimaa kadah'a feeka

39. O God, so raise him, because of his labours for Your sake,

إِلٰى الدَّرَجَةِ الْعُلْيَا مِنْ جَنَّتِكَ

ilaad-darajatil-u'l-yaa min jan-natika

40. to the highest degree of Your Garden,

حَتَّى لاَ يُسَاوَى فِي مَنْزِلَة

h'at-taa laa yusaawaa fee manzilah

41. that none may equal him in station,

وَلا يُكَاْفَأَ فِي مَرْتَبَة

wa laa yukaafaa fee mar-tabah

42. none may match him in level,

وَلَا يُوَازِيَهُ لَدَيْكَ مَلَكٌ مُقَرَّبٌ وَلَا نَبِيٌّ مُرْسَلٌ

wa laa yuwaazeehoo laday-ka malakum-muqar-raboo-wa laa nabee-yum-mur-sal

43. and no angel brought nigh or prophet sent out may parallel him in Your sight.

وَعَرِّفْهُ فِي أَهْلِهِ الطَّاهِرِينَ

wa a'r-rif-hoo feee ah-lihit'-t'aahireena

44. And inform him concerning his Household the pure

وَاُمَّتِهِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ حُسْنِ الشَّفَاعَةِ

wa um-matihil-moo-mineena min h'us-nish-shafaaa'ti

45. and his community the faithful of an excellent intercession,

أَجَلَّ مَا وَعَدْتَهُ يَا نَافِذَ الْعِدَةِ

ajal-la maa waa't-tah yaa naafid'al-i'dah

46. greater than what You hast promised him! O Keeper of promises!

يَا وَافِىَ الْقَوْلِ يَا مُبَدِّلَ السَّيِّئَاتِ بِأَضْعَافِهَا مِنَ الْحَسَنَاتِ

yaa waafeeal-qaw-l yaa mubad-dilas-say-yi-aati biz''-a'afihaa minal-h'asanaat

47. O Faithful to Your word! O He who changes evil deeds into manifold good deeds!

إنَّكَ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ الْجَوَادُ اَلْكَرِيمُ

in-naka d'ool-faz''-lil-a'z'eem

48. You art of bounty abounding!
