  1. 1

O He Whom the hope of the hopeful does not pass by,

  2. 2

O He with Whom the reward of the good-doers is not lost,

  3. 3

O He Who is the utmost limit of the fear of the worshippers,

  4. 4

O He Who is the goal of the reverence of the God-fearing.

  5. 5

This is the station of him whom the hands of sins have exchanged,

  6. 6

and the reins of errors have led,

  7. 7

    وَاسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ،

    and Satan has overcome;

  8. 8

so he fell short in what You commanded by negligence,

  9. 9

and he committed what You forbade by delusion,

  10. 10

like him who is ignorant of Your power over him,

  11. 11

or like him who denies the favour of Your kindness to him.

  12. 12

Until when the sight of guidance opened to him,

  13. 13

and the clouds of blindness cleared from him, he counted what he had wronged his soul with,

  14. 14

and he reflected upon what he had opposed his Lord with.

  15. 15

So he saw the enormity of his disobedience as immense, and the greatness of his opposition as great.

  16. 16

So he turned toward You, hopeful of You, ashamed before You,

  17. 17

and directed his desire toward You, trusting in You.

  18. 18

So he aimed at You with his greed, having certainty, and intended You with his fear, having sincerity.

  19. 19

His greed has become devoid of every object of greed other than You,

  20. 20

and his terror has settled from every object of dread other than You.

  21. 21

So he stood before You, imploring,

  22. 22

and lowered his gaze to the ground, humble,

  23. 23

and bowed his head low to Your Might, submissive,

  24. 24

and scattered before You of his secret what You know better than him, in surrender,

  25. 25

and enumerated of his sins what You have counted more exactly, in awe,

  26. 26

and sought succour in You from the immensity of what has come to pass through him in Your knowledge,

  27. 27

and the ugliness of what has disgraced him in Your judgment,

  28. 28

of sins whose pleasures have passed and gone,

  29. 29

but whose consequences remain and have become incumbent.

  30. 30

He does not deny, O my God, Your justice if You punish him,

  31. 31

    وَلا يَسْتَعْظِمُ عَفْوَكَ إِنْ عَفَوْتَ عَنْهُ وَرَحِمْتَهُ;

    nor does he consider Your pardon great if You pardon him and have mercy on him;

  32. 32

because You are the Noble Lord

  33. 33

Whom the forgiveness of the tremendous sin does not overwhelm.

  34. 34

O God, behold, here I am, I have come to You obedient

  35. 35

to Your command in what You commanded of supplication,

  36. 36

fulfilling Your promise in what You promised of answer when You say:

  37. 37

("Call upon Me; I will respond to you.") [Qur'an 40:60]

  38. 38

O God, so bless Muhammad and his Household

  39. 39

and encounter me with Your forgiveness as I have encountered You with my confession,

  40. 40

and raise me up from the downfalls of sins as I have humbled myself before You,

  41. 41

and cover me with Your covering as You have been deliberate in taking vengeance against me.

  42. 42

O God, and establish my intention in Your obedience,

  43. 43

and confirm my insight in Your worship,

  44. 44

and grant me success in works

  45. 45

by which You may wash the dirt of errors from me,

  46. 46

and make me die on Your creed and the creed of Your Prophet

  47. 47

Muḥammad, peace be upon him, when You make me die.

  48. 48

O God, I repent to You in this station of mine

  49. 49

from the major sins of mine and the minor,

  50. 50

and the hidden evil acts of mine and the manifest,

  51. 51

and the past slips of mine and the recent,

  52. 52

the repentance of one who does not talk to himself of an act of disobedience

  53. 53

and does not hide the intention to return to an error.

  54. 54

For You have said, O my God, in the firm text of Your Book,

  55. 55

that You accept the repentance of Your servants,

  56. 56

and pardon evil deeds, and love the repenters.

  57. 57

So accept my repentance as You promised, and pardon my evil deeds as You guaranteed,

  58. 58

and make Your love incumbent upon me as You stipulated,

  59. 59

And Yours, O Lord, is my stipulation that I will not return to what You dislike,

  60. 60

and my guarantee that I will not revert to what You blame,

  61. 61

and my covenant that I will abandon all acts of disobedience to You.

  62. 62

O God, surely You know better what I have done, so forgive me what You know,

  63. 63

and divert me by Your power to what You love.

  64. 64

O God, and incumbent upon me are consequences that I have guarded,

  65. 65

and consequences that I have forgotten,

  66. 66

and all of them are in Your eye that does not sleep,

  67. 67

    وَعِلْمِكَ الَّذِي لا يَنْسَى

    and Your knowledge that does not forget;

  68. 68

so compensate their owners for them, and put down their burden from me,

  69. 69

and lighten their weight from me, and protect me from committing their like.

  70. 70

O God, surely there is no fulfillment for me in repentance save by Your protection,

  71. 71

and no holding back for me from errors save by Your strength,

  72. 72

so strengthen me with a sufficient power, and assume authority over me with a preventive protection.

  73. 73

O God, any servant who repents to You,

  74. 74

while in the knowledge of the unseen with You he is one who will break his repentance

  75. 75

and return to his sin and his error—

  76. 76

surely I seek refuge in You from being like that.

  77. 77

So make this repentance of mine a repentance after which I will not need a repentance,

  78. 78

a repentance that necessitates the wiping out of what has passed, and safety in what remains.

  79. 79

O God, I apologize to You for my ignorance,

  80. 80

and I ask You for a gift to cover my evil deed,

  81. 81

so join me to the protection of Your mercy out of bounty,

  82. 82

and cover me with the covering of Your well-being out of grace.

  83. 83

O God, I repent to You

  84. 84

from everything that opposes Your Will,

  85. 85

or turns away from Your Love,

  86. 86

whether it be from the thoughts of my heart,

  87. 87

and the glances of my eye,

  88. 88

and the narrations of my tongue,

  89. 89

a repentance by which every limb, singly, is preserved from Your consequences,

  90. 90

and is safe from what the transgressors fear of Your painful assaults.

  91. 91

O God, then have mercy on my solitude before You,

  92. 92

and the throbbing of my heart from Your reverence,

  93. 93

and the trembling of my limbs from Your awe.

  94. 94

For surely, O Lord, my sins have made me stand in the station of ignominy at Your door,

  95. 95

so if I am silent, no one will speak on my behalf,

  96. 96

and if I intercede, I am not worthy of intercession.

  97. 97

O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

  98. 98

and make Your Generosity an intercessor for my errors,

  99. 99

and revert to my evil deeds with Your pardon,

  100. 100

and do not repay me my full recompense with Your punishment,

  101. 101

and spread over me Your favor and cover me with Your covering,

  102. 102

and deal with me with the dealing of a Mighty One to whom a lowly servant implored and he had mercy on him,

  103. 103

or a Rich One to whom a poor servant exposed himself and he revived him.

  104. 104

O God, there is no one who can grant me protection from You, so let Your Might protect me,

  105. 105

and no intercessor for me before You, so let Your Favor intercede for me,

  106. 106

and my errors have frightened me, so let Your Pardon grant me security.

  107. 107

For not all that I have spoken is from my ignorance of the evil effect of my deeds,

  108. 108

nor forgetfulness of what has preceded of my blameworthy action,

  109. 109

but so that Your Heaven and whoever is in it may hear,

  110. 110

and Your Earth and whoever is upon it may hear what I have revealed to You of remorse,

  111. 111

and what I have taken refuge in You for, of repentance,

  112. 112

so that perhaps some of them, through Your mercy, may have mercy on me because of my evil stance,

  113. 113

or a softness may overtake them toward me because of my evil state,

  114. 114

and so I may gain from them a prayer more heard with You than my prayer,

  115. 115

or an intercession more certain with You than my intercession,

  116. 116

by which will be my deliverance from Your wrath and my triumph with Your pleasure.

  117. 117

O God, if remorse is repentance to You, then I am the most remorseful of the remorseful,

  118. 118

and if the forsaking of disobedience to You is turning back, then I am the first of those who turn back,

  119. 119

and if seeking forgiveness is a remission of sins, then I am among those who seek forgiveness before You.

  120. 120

O God, just as You commanded repentance and guaranteed acceptance,

  121. 121

and urged to supplication and promised response,

  122. 122

so bless Muhammad and his Household, and accept my repentance,

  123. 123

and do not return me to the place of disappointment from Your mercy.

  124. 124

Surely You are the Relenting One toward the sinners,

  125. 125

and the Merciful to the erring ones who turn back.

  126. 126

O God, bless Muhammad and his Household, just as You guided us through him,

  127. 127

and bless Muhammad and his Household, just as You rescued us through him,

  128. 128

and bless Muhammad and his Household

  129. 129

with a blessing that intercedes for us on the Day of Resurrection and the Day of our utter need for You.

  130. 130

Surely You are powerful over everything, and that is easy for You.

  131. 131

1.O God, O He whom the depiction of the describers fails to describe!

  132. 132

2.O He beyond whom passes not the hope of the hopers!

  133. 133

3.O He with whom is not lost the wage of the good-doers!

  134. 134

4.O He who is the ultimate object of the fear of the worshipers!

  135. 135

5.O He who is the utmost limit of the dread of the godfearing!

  136. 136

6.This is the station of him whom sins have passed from hand to hand.

  137. 137

7.Offenses' reins have led him on,

  138. 138

8.and Satan has gained mastery over him.

  139. 139

9.He fell short of what You hast commanded through neglect

  140. 140

10.and he pursued what You hast prohibited in delusion,

  141. 141

11.like one ignorant of Your power over him

  142. 142

12.or one who denies the bounty of Your beneficence toward him,

  143. 143

13.until, when the eye of guidance was opened for him

  144. 144

14.and the clouds of blindness were dispelled, he reckoned that through which he had wronged himself

  145. 145

15.and reflected upon that in which he had opposed his Lord.

  146. 146

16.He saw his vast disobedience as vast and his great opposition as great.

  147. 147

17.So turned to You, hoping in You and ashamed before You,

  148. 148

18.and he directed his beseeching toward You, having trust in You.

  149. 149

19.He repaired to You in his longing with certitude and he went straight to You in fear with sincerity.

  150. 150

20.His longing was devoid of every object of longing but You,

  151. 151

21.and his fright departed from every object of fear but You.

  152. 152

22.So he stood before You pleading,

  153. 153

23.his eyes turned toward the ground in humbleness,

  154. 154

    وَطَأطَأَ رَأسَهُ لِعِزَّتِكَ مُتَذَلِّلاً،

    24.his head bowed before Your might in lowliness;

  155. 155

    وَأَبَثَّكَ مِنْ سِرِّهِ مَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنْهُ خَضُوعاً،

    25.he revealed to You in meekness those secrets of his which You knowest better than he;

  156. 156

    وَعَدَّدَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِ مَا أَنْتَ أَحْصَى لَهَا خُشُوعاً

    26.he numbered for You in humility those sins of his which You countest better than he;

  157. 157

27.he sought help from You before the dreadful into which he has fallen in Your knowledge

  158. 158

28.and the ugly which has disgraced him in Your judgement:

  159. 159

29.the sins whose pleasures have turned their backs and gone

  160. 160

30.and whose evil consequences have stayed and stuck fast.

  161. 161

31.He will not deny Your justice, my God, if You punishest him,

  162. 162

    وَلا يَسْتَعْظِمُ عَفْوَكَ إنْ عَفَوْتَ عَنْهُ وَرَحِمْتَهُ;

32.nor will he consider Your pardon great if You pardonest him and hast mercy upon him,

  163. 163

33.for You art the Generous Lord

  164. 164

34.for whom the forgiveness of great sins is nothing great!

  165. 165

35.O God, so here I am: I have come to You obeying Your command

  166. 166

    36.(for You hast commanded supplication)

  167. 167

37.and asking the fulfilment of Your promise, (for You hast promised to respond):

  168. 168

38.You hast said, "Supplicate Me and I will respond to you" (40:60).

  169. 169

39.O God, so bless Muhammad and his Household,

  170. 170

40.meet me with Your forgiveness just as I have met You with my confession,

  171. 171

41.lift me up from the fatal infirmities of sins just as I have let myself down before You,

  172. 172

42.and cover me with Your covering just as You hast shown no haste to take vengeance on me!

  173. 173

43.O God, make firm my intention to obey You,

  174. 174

44.strengthen my insight in worshipping You,

  175. 175

45.give me the success of works

  176. 176

46.which will wash away the defilement of offenses,

  177. 177

47.and take me when You takest me in the creed of Your prophet

  178. 178

    48.Muhammad (upon him be peace).

  179. 179

49.O God, I repent to You in this my station from

  180. 180

    50.my sins, great and small,

  181. 181

51.my evil deeds, inward and outward,

  182. 182

    52.my lapses, past and recent,

  183. 183

53.with the repentance of one who does not tell himself that he might disobey

  184. 184

54.or secretly think that he might return to an offense.

  185. 185

55.You hast said, my God, in the firm text of Your Book,

  186. 186

56.that You 'acceptest repentance from Your servants,

  187. 187

57.pardonest evil deeds' (ref.42:25), and lovest the repenters (ref.2:222),

  188. 188

58.so accept my repentance as You hast promised, pardon my evil deeds as You hast guaranteed,

  189. 189

59.and make obligatory toward me Your love as You hast stipulated!

  190. 190

60.To You, my Lord, belongs my stipulation that I will not return to what is disliked by You,

  191. 191

61.my guarantee that I will not go back to what You blamest,

  192. 192

62.and my covenant that I will stay away from acts of disobedience to You.

  193. 193

63.O God, You knowest better what I have done, so forgive me what You knowest

  194. 194

64.and turn me through Your power to what You lovest!

  195. 195

65.O God, counted against me are claims that stay in my memory

  196. 196

66.and claims that I have forgotten,

  197. 197

67.while all of them remain in Your eye that does not sleep

  198. 198

68.and Your knowledge that does not forget!

  199. 199

69.So compensate their owners, lighten their load upon me,

  200. 200

70.lift up their weight from me, and preserve me from approaching their like!

  201. 201

71.O God, but I can not be faithful to my repentance without Your preservation,

  202. 202

72.nor can I refrain from offenses without Your strength.

  203. 203

73.So strengthen me with a sufficient strength and attend to me with a defending preservation!

  204. 204

74.O God, if any servant repents to You,

  205. 205

75.while in Your knowledge of the Unseen he will break his repentance

  206. 206

76.and return to his sin and offense,

  207. 207

77.I seek refuge in You lest I be like that!

  208. 208

78.So make this my repentance a repentance after which I will need no repentance

  209. 209

79.and a repentance which will obligate the erasing of what has gone by and safety in what remains!

  210. 210

80.O God, I ask pardon from You for my ignorance,

  211. 211

81.and I ask You to disregard my evil acts!

  212. 212

82.So join me to the shelter of Your mercy through graciousness

  213. 213

83.and cover me with the covering of Your well-being through bounteousness!

  214. 214

84.O God, I repent to You

  215. 215

85.from everything opposed to Your will

  216. 216

86.or far from Your love -

  217. 217

    87.the thoughts of my heart,

  218. 218

    88.the glances of my eye,

  219. 219

89.the tales of my tongue -

  220. 220

90.with a repentance through which each bodily part will by itself stay safe from ill consequences with You

  221. 221

91.and remain secure from Your painful penalties feared by transgressors!

  222. 222

92.O God, so have mercy on my being alone before You,

  223. 223

93.the pounding of my heart in dread of You,

  224. 224

94.the trembling of my limbs in awe of You!

  225. 225

95.My sins, my God, have stood me in the station of degradation in Your courtyard.

  226. 226

    فَإنْ سَكَتُّ لَمْ يَنْطِقْ عَنِّي أَحَدٌ،

    96.If I remain silent, none will speak for me;

  227. 227

97.if I seek an intercessor, I am not worthy for intercession.

  228. 228

98.O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

  229. 229

99.make Your generosity intercede for my offenses,

  230. 230

100.follow up my evil deeds with Your pardon,

  231. 231
