  1. 1

the Unassailable without armies or helpers,

  2. 2

and the Enduring Might throughout the passing of ages,

  3. 3

the long-passed years, and the elapsed times and days!

  4. 4

Your dominion is Mighty with a Might that has no limit in beginning and no end in finality,

  5. 5

and Your kingdom is exalted with an Exaltation below the attainment of whose term all things fall short,

  6. 6

and the utmost description of the describers does not reach the least of what You have singled out for Yourself of that.

  7. 7

The attributes have been lost concerning You, and the descriptions have been dissolved below You,

  8. 8

and the subtleties of imaginings are bewildered in Your Grandeur.

  9. 9

Thus are You, God, the First in Your primordiality,

  10. 10

and upon that You are Everlasting, You do not pass away.

  11. 11

And I am the servant, weak in deed, tremendous in hope,

  12. 12

the means of connections have passed from my hand, save what Your Mercy connects,

  13. 13

and the ties of hopes have been cut off from me,

  14. 14

save what I cling to of Your Pardon.

  15. 15

Little is what I hold in esteem of my obedience to You,

  16. 16

and much is what I acknowledge of my disobedience to You.

  17. 17

And Your pardon will not be too difficult for You regarding Your servant, even if he did wrong, so pardon me.

  18. 18

O God, Your knowledge has looked over the hidden parts of deeds,

  19. 19

and every concealed thing has been unveiled before Your awareness,

  20. 20

and the subtleties of affairs are not folded up from You,

  21. 21

nor are the hidden things of secrets absent from You.

  22. 22

And Your enemy has overcome me—the one who asked You for a respite to lead me astray, and You granted him respite,

  23. 23

and who asked You for a delay until the Day of Judgment to mislead me, and You gave him a delay.

  24. 24

So he made me fall, while I was fleeing to You,

  25. 25

    from minor sins that destroy,

  26. 26

    and major deeds that ruin,

  27. 27

until when I committed an act of disobedience to You,

  28. 28

and incurred Your wrath through my evil striving,

  29. 29

he twisted the rope of his treachery away from me,

  30. 30

and met me with his word of ingratitude,

  31. 31

and he assumed innocence of me and turned away, retreating from me.

  32. 32

So he left me exposed to Your wrath, alone,

  33. 33

and expelled me to the courtyard of Your vengeance, driven out.

  34. 34

There is no intercessor to intercede for me with You,

  35. 35

and no protector to grant me security from You,

  36. 36

and no fortress to veil me from You,

  37. 37

and no refuge to shelter in from You.

  38. 38

So this is the station of the one seeking refuge in You, and the place of the one confessing to You,

  39. 39

so let Your Favor not become narrow for me, and let Your Pardon not fall short of me,

  40. 40

and let me not be the most disappointed of Your repenting servants,

  41. 41

and not the most despairing of Your hopeful delegations.

  42. 42

And forgive me, surely You are the best of those who forgive.

  43. 43

O God, surely You commanded me, and I abandoned, and You forbade me, and I committed,

  44. 44

and the thought of evil tempted me to error, and I neglected,

  45. 45

and I do not call to witness my fasting by day,

  46. 46

nor do I seek refuge in my night vigil,

  47. 47

and no supererogatory act praises me for reviving it,

  48. 48

except for Your obligatory duties, which he who neglects them perishes.

  49. 49

And I do not draw close to You by the merit of a supererogatory prayer,

  50. 50

along with the great deal I have neglected of the functions of Your obligatory duties,

  51. 51

and transgressed beyond the bounds of Your limits,

  52. 52

to sacred things that I violated, and major sins that I committed,

  53. 53

while Your well-being was a covering for me from their disgraces.

  54. 54

And this is the station of him who was ashamed of himself before You,

  55. 55

and became angry with it, and was pleased with You.

  56. 56

So he met You with a humble soul, a submissive neck, and a back heavily laden with errors,

  57. 57

standing between desire for You and dread of You.

  58. 58

And You are the worthiest of those he has hoped for,

  59. 59

and the most entitled of those he has feared and guarded against.

  60. 60

So give me, O Lord, what I have hoped for, and grant me security from what I have warned against,

  61. 61

and revert to me with the benefit of Your mercy, surely You are the Most Generous of those asked.

  62. 62

O God, since You covered me with Your pardon and submerged me in Your favor,

  63. 63

in the abode of passing away, in the presence of equals,

  64. 64

then shelter me from the disgraces of the abode of permanence,

  65. 65

at the standing-places of the witnesses: the nearest angels,

  66. 66

the honored Messengers, the martyrs, and the righteous,

  67. 67

from a neighbor whom I used to conceal my evil deeds from,

  68. 68

and from a relative whom I used to feel ashamed before concerning my secrets.

  69. 69

I did not trust them, my Lord, in covering me,

  70. 70

but I trusted in You, my Lord, in forgiving me,

  71. 71

and You are the worthiest of those trusted, and the most giving of those desired,

  72. 72

and the most compassionate of those whose mercy is sought, so have mercy on me.

  73. 73

O God, You caused me to descend as a despised water from a loins,

  74. 74

narrow in bones, difficult in passages,

  75. 75

to a narrow womb that You covered with veils.

  76. 76

You varied me from one state to another until You brought me to the completion of the form,

  77. 77

and established the limbs in me,

  78. 78

as You described in Your Book:

  79. 79

a drop, then a clot, then a lump of flesh, then bones,

  80. 80

then You clothed the bones with flesh, then You brought me forth as another creation, as You willed,

  81. 81

until when I needed Your provision,

  82. 82

and could not dispense with the help of Your favor,

  83. 83

You made for me sustenance from the excess of food and drink

  84. 84

that You caused to flow for Your female servant in whose belly You lodged me and in the settled place of whose womb You deposited me.

  85. 85

And if You had abandoned me, O Lord, in those states to my own ability,

  86. 86

or compelled me to my own strength,

  87. 87

the ability would have been withdrawn from me, and the strength would have been far from me.

  88. 88

So You nourished me with Your favor, the nourishment of the Kind, Gentle One,

  89. 89

doing that to me as a bounty upon me, until this present time of mine.

  90. 90

I am not deprived of Your goodness, nor is the excellence of Your making slow for me.

  91. 91

Yet, with all that, my trust is not confirmed,

  92. 92

so that I might devote myself to what is more felicitous for me with You.

  93. 93

Satan has taken hold of my rein through ill opinion and weakness of certainty,

  94. 94

so I complain of the evil of his neighboring me and the obedience of my soul to him.

  95. 95

And I ask You for protection from his dominion, and I implore You to turn his trickery away from me,

  96. 96

and I ask You to make easy a path to my provision.

  97. 97

So praise belongs to You for Your initiation of immense blessings,

  98. 98

and Your inspiration of thanks for kindness and favor.

  99. 99

So bless Muhammad and his Household,

  100. 100

and make my provision easy for me, and make me content with Your destiny for me,

  101. 101

and satisfy me with my portion in what You have allocated for me,

  102. 102

and make what has passed of my body and my life

  103. 103

in the way of Your obedience, surely You are the best of providers.

  104. 104

O God, I seek refuge in You from a Fire by which You showed severity toward whoever disobeyed You,

  105. 105

and with which You threatened whoever turned away from Your pleasure,

  106. 106

and from a Fire whose light is darkness, whose ease is painful, and whose far is near,

  107. 107

and from a Fire some of which devours some,

  108. 108

and some of which assaults some,

  109. 109

and from a Fire that leaves the bones as decayed dust,

  110. 110

and gives its inhabitants scalding water to drink,

  111. 111

and from a Fire that does not spare whoever implores it,

  112. 112

and does not pity whoever asks for its compassion,

  113. 113

and cannot alleviate from whoever is humbled before it and surrenders to it.

  114. 114

It meets its inhabitants with the hottest of what it possesses of painful retribution and severe wretchedness.

  115. 115

And I seek refuge in You from its scorpions whose mouths are wide open,

  116. 116

and its serpents that strike with their fangs,

  117. 117

and its drink which cuts up the intestines and hearts of its inhabitants and tears out their hearts.

  118. 118

And I ask You for guidance to what keeps far from it and delays from it.

  119. 119

O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

  120. 120

and shelter me from it through the favor of Your mercy,

  121. 121

and pardon my slips through the excellence of Your pardon,

  122. 122

and do not forsake me, O best of those who grant shelter.

  123. 123

O God, surely You ward off the detested, and You give the good,

  124. 124

and You do what You will, and You are powerful over everything.

  125. 125

O God, bless Muhammad and his Household when the righteous are mentioned,

  126. 126

and bless Muhammad and his Household as long as the night and the day follow each other,

  127. 127

a blessing whose supply is not cut off,

  128. 128

and whose number is not counted, a blessing that loads the atmosphere,

  129. 129

and fills the earth and the sky.

  130. 130

May God bless him until He is pleased,

  131. 131

and may God bless him and his Household

  132. 132

after His pleasure, with a blessing that has no limit

  133. 133

and no end, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

  134. 134

1.O God, O Possessor of kingdom perpetual in everlastingness,

  135. 135

2.authority invincible without armies or helpers,

  136. 136

    3.might abiding through aeons past,

  137. 137

4.years gone by, times and days elapsed!

  138. 138

5.Your authority is mighty with a might that knows no bound by being first nor utmost end by being last!

  139. 139

    وَاسْتَعْلَى مُلْكُكَ عُلُوّاً سَقَطَتِ الأشْيَاءُ دُونَ بُلُوغِ أَمَدِهِ

    6.Your kingdom towers high with a towering before which all things fall down without reaching its term;

  140. 140

7.the least of it which You hast kept to Yourself is not reached by the furthest description of the describers!

  141. 141

8.Attributes go astray in You, descriptions fall apart below You,

  142. 142

9.the subtlest of imaginations are bewildered by Your magnificence!

  143. 143

10.So art Thou: God, the First in Your firstness,

  144. 144

11.and so art You everlastingly. You dost not pass away.

  145. 145

12.But I am the slave, feeble in works, immense in hopes.

  146. 146

    خَرَجَتْ مِنْ يَدِي أَسْبَابُ الْوُصُلاَت إلاّ مَا وَصَلَهُ رَحْمَتُكَ ،

    13.The tying links are outside my hand, except what is tied by Your mercy;

  147. 147

14.the bonds of hopes have been cut away from me,

  148. 148

15.except the pardon to which I hold fast.

  149. 149

16.Little on my part is the obedience toward You upon which I count,

  150. 150

17.and great against me the disobedience toward You to which I have reverted.

  151. 151

18.But pardoning Your slave will not constrain You, even if he be bad, so pardon me!

  152. 152

19.O God, Your knowledge watches over hidden works

  153. 153

20.every covered thing is exposed before Your awareness,

  154. 154

21.the intricacies of things are not concealed from You,

  155. 155

22.and unseen mysteries slip not away from You.

  156. 156

23.But over me Your enemy has gained mastery: He asked a delay from You to lead me astray, and You gavest him the delay!

  157. 157

24.He asked a respite from You until the Day of Doom to misguide me, and You gavest him the respite!

  158. 158

25.So he threw me down, though I had fled to You

  159. 159

    26.from small, ruinous sins

  160. 160

    27.and great, deadly works,

  161. 161

28.until, when I had yielded to disobeying You

  162. 162

29.and merited Your anger through my bad efforts,

  163. 163

30.he turned the bridle of his treachery away from me,

  164. 164

31.met me with the word of his ingratitude,

  165. 165

32.undertook to be quit of me, turned his back to flee from me,

  166. 166

33.threw me to the desert of Your wrath alone,

  167. 167

34.and sent me as an outcast into the courtyard of Your vengeance.

  168. 168

35.There is no intercessor to intercede for me with You,

  169. 169

36.no protector to make me feel secure against You,

  170. 170

37.no fortress to veil me from You,

  171. 171

38.no shelter in which to seek asylum apart from You!

  172. 172

39.This is the station of him who takes refuge with You, the place of the confessor to You:

  173. 173

40.Let not Your bounty be too narrow for me, let not Your pardon fall short of me!

  174. 174

41.Let me not be the most disappointed of Your repentant servants,

  175. 175

42.nor the most despairing of those who come to You with expectations!

  176. 176

43.Forgive me, surely You art the best of the forgivers!

  177. 177

44.O God, You commanded me, and I refrained, You prohibited me, and I committed.

  178. 178

45.evil thoughts tempted me to offend, and I was negligent.

  179. 179

46.I cannot call upon daytime to witness my fasting,

  180. 180

    وَلاَ أَسْتَجِيرُ بِتَهَجُّدِي لَيْلاً،

    47.nor can I seek sanctuary in night because of my vigil;

  181. 181

48.no Sunna praises me for keeping it alive,

  182. 182

49.only Your obligations, he who neglects which has perished.

  183. 183

50.I cannot seek access to You through the excellence of a supererogatory work,

  184. 184

51.given the many duties of Your obligations of which I have been heedless

  185. 185

52.and the stations of Your bounds which I have transgressed,

  186. 186

53.thereby violating sacred things and committing great sins,

  187. 187

54.though You hast given me safety from their disgraces as a covering.

  188. 188

55.This is the station of him who is ashamed of himself before You,

  189. 189

56.angry with himself, and satisfied with You.

  190. 190

57.He meets You with a humble soul, a neck bent down, a back heavy with offenses,

  191. 191

58.hesitating between longing for You and fear of You.

  192. 192

59.You art the most worthy of those in whom he might hope,

  193. 193

60.the most deserving for him to dread and fear.

  194. 194

61.So give me, my Lord, what I hope for, make me secure against what frightens me,

  195. 195

62.and act kindly toward me with the kindly act of mercy! Surely You art the most generous of those from whom are asked!

  196. 196

63.O God, since You hast covered me with Your pardon and shielded me with Your bounty

  197. 197

64.in the abode of annihilation and the presence of equals

  198. 198

65.grant me sanctuary from the disgraces of the Abode of Subsistence

  199. 199

66.at the standing places of the Witnesses (the angels brought nigh,

  200. 200

67.the messengers honoured, the martyrs, the righteous)

  201. 201

68.before the neighbour from whom I have hidden my evil deeds

  202. 202

69.and the womb relative before whom I feel ashamed in my secret thoughts!

  203. 203

70.I trust them not, my Lord, to cover me over,

  204. 204

71.but I trust You, my Lord, to forgive me!

  205. 205

72.You art the most worthy of those in whom confidence is had, the most giving of those who are besought,

  206. 206

73.and the most clement of those from whom mercy is asked. So have mercy upon me!

  207. 207

74.O God, You caused me to descend as mean water from loins

  208. 208

75.of narrow bones and tight passages

  209. 209

    إلَى رَحِم ضَيِّقَة سَتَرْتَهَا بِالْحُجُبِ

    76.into a constricted womb which You hadst covered with veils;

  210. 210

77.You turned me about from state to state until You tookest me to the completion of the form

  211. 211

78.and fixed within me the bodily parts,

  212. 212

79.as You hast described in Your Book:

  213. 213

80.a drop, then a clot, then a tissue, then bones,

  214. 214

81.then You garmented the bones with flesh, then You produced me as another creature as You willed (ref.23:12-14).

  215. 215

82.Then, when I needed Your provision,

  216. 216

83.and could not do without the aid of Your bounty,

  217. 217

84.You appointed for me a nourishment from the bounty of the food and drink

  218. 218

85.which You bestowed upon Your handmaid in whose belly You gavest me to rest and in the lodging of whose womb You deposited me.

  219. 219

86.Hadst You entrusted me in those states, my Lord, to my own force

  220. 220

87.or driven me to have recourse to my own strength,

  221. 221

88.force would have been removed from me and strength taken far away.

  222. 222

    فَغَذَوْتَنِي بِفَضْلِكَ غِذَاءَ البَرِّ اللَّطِيفِ ،

    89.So You hast fed me through Your bounty with the food of the Good, the Gentle;

  223. 223

90.You hast done that for me in graciousness toward me up to this my present point.

  224. 224

91.I do not lack Your goodness nor does Your benefaction keep me waiting.

  225. 225
