  1. 1

and O He who accepts him whom the lands do not accept,

  2. 2

and O He who does not scorn those in need of Him,

  3. 3

and O He who does not disappoint those who insistently plead to Him,

  4. 4

and O He who does not meet those who presume upon Him with rejection,

  5. 5

and O He who chooses the small gift which is offered to Him,

  6. 6

and thanks for the little that is done for Him.

  7. 7

And O He who thanks for the little, and recompenses with the great,

  8. 8

and O He who comes near to him who comes near to Him,

  9. 9

and O He who invites to Himself him who turns away from Him,

  10. 10

and O He who does not change the favor, and does not hasten with vengeance,

  11. 11

and O He who makes the good deed fruitful until He increases it,

  12. 12

and overlooks the evil deed until He wipes it out.

  13. 13

Hopes have turned away short of the extent of Your generosity with [the fulfillment of] needs,

  14. 14

and the vessels of requests have been filled by the overflowing of Your bounty,

  15. 15

and descriptions have dissolved short of attaining the expression of Your quality.

  16. 16

So Yours is the supreme exaltation above every high one,

  17. 17

and the most glorious majesty above every majesty.

  18. 18

Every great thing is small beside You,

  19. 19

and every noble thing is contemptible beside Your nobility.

  20. 20

Disappointed are those who come to anyone other than You,

  21. 21

and lost are those who expose themselves to anyone but You,

  22. 22

and wasted are those who resort to anyone but You,

  23. 23

and barren are those who seek pasture, except him who seeks Your favor as pasture.

  24. 24

Your door is open to those who desire,

  25. 25

and Your bounty is allowed to those who ask,

  26. 26

and Your assistance is near to those who seek help.

  27. 27

The hopers are not disappointed by You,

  28. 28

and those who expose themselves to Your giving do not despair,

  29. 29

and those who seek forgiveness are not wretched through Your vengeance.

  30. 30

Your provision is spread out for him who disobeys You,

  31. 31

and Your forbearance confronts him who opposes You.

  32. 32

Your custom is beneficence toward the evil-doers,

  33. 33

and Your wont is to keep the transgressors alive,

  34. 34

until Your clemency almost deluded them from returning,

  35. 35

and Your delay turned them away from repentance.

  36. 36

But You only delayed them so they might return to Your command,

  37. 37

and You gave them respite, trusting in the permanence of Your kingdom.

  38. 38

So whoever was among the people of felicity, You sealed his end with it,

  39. 39

and whoever was among the people of wretchedness, You abandoned him to it.

  40. 40

All of them are proceeding to Your judgment,

  41. 41

and their affairs are tending toward Your command.

  42. 42

Your sovereignty was not weakened by their long duration,

  43. 43

and Your proof was not refuted by Your leaving off their hastening [to punishment].

  44. 44

Your proof is standing, never refuted,

  45. 45

and Your sovereignty is firm, never ceasing.

  46. 46

So lasting woe belongs to him who swerved from You,

  47. 47

and disappointing loss to him who was disappointed by You,

  48. 48

and the most wretched wretchedness to him who was deluded by You.

  49. 49

How much he will be turned about in Your punishment,

  50. 50

and how long he will be moved back and forth in Your penalty,

  51. 51

and how distant his limit is from relief,

  52. 52

and how hopeless he is of an easy way out!

  53. 53

As justice from Your decree, in which You do not act wrongfully,

  54. 54

and as equity from Your judgment, against which You do not incline.

  55. 55

For You have made the proofs manifest,

  56. 56

    and set forth the excuses,

  57. 57

and You have preceded with the threat

  58. 58

    and dealt kindly in enticing,

  59. 59

    and cited the examples,

  60. 60

    and prolonged the respite,

  61. 61

and delayed, though You are able to hasten,

  62. 62

and acted with clemency, though You are able to commence.

  63. 63

    Your clemency was not helplessness,

  64. 64

and Your delay was not weakness,

  65. 65

and Your withholding was not heedlessness,

  66. 66

and Your waiting was not flattering,

  67. 67

but [it was] so that Your proof might be more eloquent,

  68. 68

    and Your generosity more perfect,

  69. 69

    and Your beneficence more abundant,

  70. 70

    and Your blessing more complete.

  71. 71

All of that was and You have not ceased,

  72. 72

and it is being and You will not cease.

  73. 73

Your proof is too magnificent to be described in its totality,

  74. 74

and Your glory is too sublime to be limited in its essence,

  75. 75

and Your blessing is too abundant to be counted in its entirety,

  76. 76

and Your beneficence is too much to be thanked for its least part.

  77. 77

And silence has fallen short of praising You,

  78. 78

and withholding has made me speechless from glorifying You,

  79. 79

and my utmost is the acknowledgment of the inability

  80. 80

    — not from reluctance, O my God, but from incapacity.

  81. 81

So here I am, seeking You by coming to You,

  82. 82

and asking You for the excellence of reception.

  83. 83

So bless Muhammad and his Household,

  84. 84

    and hear my secret supplication,

  85. 85

    and answer my prayer,

  86. 86

and do not seal my day with my disappointment,

  87. 87

and do not meet me with rejection in my request,

  88. 88

and make my departure from You honorable,

  89. 89

    and my return to You.

  90. 90

Surely You are not constrained by what You will,

  91. 91

and not incapable of what You are asked,

  92. 92

and You are powerful over everything,

  93. 93

and there is no might and no power except with God, the Most High, the Most Great.

  94. 94

1.O He who has mercy upon him toward whom the servants show no mercy!

  95. 95

2.O He who accepts him whom the cities will not accept!

  96. 96

3.O He who looks not down upon those who have need of Him!

  97. 97

4.O He who disappoints not those who implore Him!

  98. 98

5.O He who slaps not the brow of the people of boldness toward Him with rejection!

  99. 99

6.O He who collects the little that is given to Him

  100. 100

7.and shows gratitude for the paltry that is done for Him!

  101. 101

8.O He who shows gratitude for the small and rewards with the great!

  102. 102

9.O He who comes close to him who comes close to Him!

  103. 103

10.O He who invites to Himself him who turns his back on Him!

  104. 104

11.O He who changes not favour and rushes not to vengeance!

  105. 105

12.O He who causes the good deed to bear fruit so that He may make it grow,

  106. 106

13.and overlooks the evil deed so that He may efface it!

  107. 107

14.Hopes turn back with needs fulfilled short of the extent of Your generosity,

  108. 108

15.the cups of requests fill up with the overflow of Your munificence,

  109. 109

16.and attributes fall apart without reaching Your description.

  110. 110

17.For to You belongs the highest highness above everything high,

  111. 111

18.and the most glorious majesty beyond every majesty!

  112. 112

19.Everything majestic before You is small,

  113. 113

20.everything eminent beside Your eminence vile!

  114. 114

21.Those who reach other than You are disappointed,

  115. 115

22.those who present themselves to other than You have lost, those who stay with other than You have perished,

  116. 116

23.and those who retreat - except those who retreat to Your bounty - are desolate!

  117. 117

24.Your door is open to the beseechers, Your munificence free to the askers,

  118. 118

25.Your help near to the help-seekers!

  119. 119

26.The expectant are not disappointed by You, those who present themselves despair not of Your bestowal,

  120. 120

27.the forgiveness-seekers become not wretched through Your vengeance!

  121. 121

28.Your provision is spread among those who disobey You,

  122. 122

29.Your clemency presents itself to those hostile toward You,

  123. 123

30.Your habit is beneficence toward the evildoers,

  124. 124

31.and Your wont is to spare the transgressors,

  125. 125

32.so much so that Your lack of haste deludes them from returning,

  126. 126

33.and Your disregard bars them from desisting!

  127. 127
